a fun quick read
Being a huge fan of Kim Wilkins work, it was with great curiosity and excitement that I picked up this book, written under her non de plume, Kimberely Freeman, and marking another genre for this incredibly talented writer. I already know what a masterful storyteller Wilkins is and, writing as Freemen, she doesn't disappoint. This tale of two women from the same family, told across two different time periods and in two hemispheres is compelling, tragic, thrilling and uplifting. Commencing in 1995 and swiftly moving back in time to 1930s Scotland, before shifting to Australia, it tells of one woman's search for love, place and above all, self and against the backdrop of the Depression and looming war. Beattie Blaxland starts as a woman moulded by her upbringing and the prejudices of class, sex and race. However, instead of being a woman who 'things are done to' she becomes a woman 'who does things' and, in doing so, forges a remarkable path into the future - and not only her own. That decades later, her supremely talented granddaughter, prima ballerina Emma, benefits from her grandmother's trailblazing only to have her comfortable world fall apart, is at first heart-breaking. But Emma is imbued with the Blaxland spirit and, the more she learns, through an unexpected legacy, about her grandmother's past, the more she learns about herself. This book gallops along, taking the reader by the hand and heart, plunging you into great joy and sorrow, tragedy and triumph. I read it in one sitting (well, it was broken by a general anesthetic - really!), but I couldn't put it down and longed to find out what happened. It's a powerful and moving tale about longing, loss, family, place, community and the various forces that shape the self within these and how, if we look deep enough, we can find the strength to endure what at first seems unendurable. Simply a beautiful story that I cannot recommend highly enough.
I always felt for Gregor ...

Blake is a master of research and description. Her settings are lush, her details into the lives of colonials and natives rich and as accurate as humanly possible with conflicting sources of information, the supporting cast of characters are fully realized, and the romance between Reynaud and Elise is tantalizingly delicious. Okay... I just finished this book... and I LOVED it. It is definately a high school read...11th or 12th grade [mature sexual content:]... but for all my adult book fanatics...this one's for you! When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it. The chemistry between the 2 characters is perfect [duh:] and the shifting perspectives brings a fresh touch to the reading experience. I tabbed...here is just one of my favorite "Alex" sayings... Isa, a friend, is advising Alex [gang member:] to forget Brittany [pom squad captain:]. She tells him that Britany and Alex don't belong together...that a triangle doesn't fit into a square. Alex replies, "If a square's big enough, a small triangle can fit into it perfectly. All you have to do is make a few adjustments in the equasion..." Romantic, edgy, and a desperately charming love story.
This is a funny, slightly racy story you can get for free at www.rjsilver.com. It is a quick read, and it's sure to make you chuckle.
It's quite an adventure in reading too. Drugs, food and rock&roll. Anthony Bourdain doesn't hold back much and it's interesting to see how some kitchen operate in the very tough universe. A place where everything is about having some balls and guts. Of course, not every chef is a maniac like Bourdain and he acknowledges that. I liked the rhythm and tone of the book and the focus on the food, the restaurant business and not the private life Bourdain outside the restaurant. I didn't want to know about his struggle with drugs, his marriage etc. So overall a good account of some of what goes on in the kitchen of restaurant. I watched the few episodes of the TV series based on this book last year and enjoyed it. Looking forward to the series on DVD. I'm gonna enjoy Steven's character even more.

It's almost 4AM here. Too tired to write a more robust review. I really liked this collection of short stories and I have a few I liked more than the others, but no story really stank. I'm glad to contribute to helping Sooj pay for her medical bills. I love her soundtracks for three of Catherynne M. Valente's stories.

** spoiler alert ** From the title of this book I didn't think that this would be about anything "positive". To say the least it wasn't positive at all. This book did have me anticiapted to turn the page to find out what would happen next. It even had a twist that I didn't expect! The book started off fillinf me in about a a parole officer that was in love with her parolee. That piece of information brought a sense of shock over me. Who in their right mind would risk their job? I guess love makes you do crazy things. They even lived together, it somewhat seemed unreal. The funny thing about this book was how the female parole officer tried so hard to keep their relationship a secret. One of her co-workers came over her house and saw a picture of the two (parole officer and parolee); which lead to questioning. Soon she made up many lies when people came close to summing up the truth between the two. I found the parole officer to be very stupid. She told her boyfriend (parolee) not to sell drugs; he decided not only to sell drugs but to cheat on her. She still stayed with him but threatened to turn him in. I bet you're wondering if she ever turned him in? Not telling!! The twist in the story was that a female character in the book which so happened to be the parolee's "real girlfriend" that took the wrap and did jail time for him. Her time in jail was soon to be over; she would be set free. The only thing that everybody doesn't know was that she had a couple tricks up her sleeve! Never ever underestimate a crazy woman! In Conclusion, over all I believe the author Kiki Swinson did an "ok" job on this book. Although she did a good job with the title, which would draw people in. I would recommend this book to people who like to read Urban African American books.
