He did not see himself as a reactionary longing for a past that was gone, but as the prophet of a dangerous future. The world, he said, was “entering a period when the struggle for self-preservation is going to present itself with great intenseness to thickly populated industrial countries.” Five years ago, eminent historian Paul Johnson published this concise history of Winston Churchill, in order to answer the question “Did Churchill save England?” Obviously Winston Churchill has a rich history and a definitive biography would require upwards of 1,000 pages. But there is something to be said for a 200 page biography like this one, and the focus on Churchill’s acumen about world affairs makes for a great book. First, Johnson not only hits the high points, but also adds his only personal experiences with The British Bulldog. Second, we get a real feel for the man – his tenacity, his stubbornness and his ever present wit. Lastly, sometimes a short biography such as this one serves as a taste test for delving into the longer, more exhaustive tome. I have to say I’m hooked. Winston Churchill was not only a great leader who seemed destined to lead in a time of world crisis, but an interesting personality as well. I will definitely be reading that larger biography (which Johnson recommends a few in the Further Reading section of the book).
The premise of these books is hard to swallow, but they are interesting and well written.
I completely disagree with the reviews stating that the first two acts of this play are the best. The language is clunky bereft of any real poetry. My opinion is aligned with that of Hallett Smith, (i.e. That Shakespeare merely edited the first two acts and vastly improved/rewrote the last three). It may be outlandish and difficult to stage, but God is in the details of this fantastical romance.

I'm not sure if this would be a part of the Travel Writing genre; this book chronicles the author's two years spent serving for the Peace Corps in a small town on the Yangzte River. Its pace is as moderate and beautiful as the river upon which it's set. Mr. Hessler's insights into a culture so far removed from his own Midwestern roots are never caustic or biting; instead he focuses on the personal relationships he makes (mostly with his students).

This is the latest in the Decker - Lazarus duo murder mystery books. I've read all of the one's before. This one isn't the best, but she is evolving a few of her regular characters. The father - older daughter relationship is good, too. The best part of this series of books is the writer's continued use and presence of Orthodox Jewry. It's a nice twist. When the book's secondary character, Rita, talks about cooking, oye!

According to Netflix, 3 stars = I liked it. It's definitely not going to be on my Kindle permanently, I'll file it away on my computer and probably won't look at it again, but it was a nice read for a rainy day (which today actually is). There was WAY too much time and writing invested in the sex scenes and WAY too little time invested in developing the avian shapeshifter backstory. I still don't really understand the avian shapeshifter culture that well, which is really unfortunate because it seemed to have so much potential. Not to mention there are really only two well-developed characters in the novel--development which occurs between the ubiquitous and lengthy sex scenes. I also can't call to mind what Raynard looks like, since he was essentially described as an "older man" and "large" the entire time. The "older man" really got overused. Okay! I get it! He's older than Ori, aren't there other descriptors out there to use as well? For those who like the m/m genre, I'd recommend this as a nice story to read. It won't be a favorite, but it's worth the time.

Interesting story. Kept my interest up to the end, but I was a bit dissapointed with the ending. I don't know what I expected, but somehow I wanted more justice.
