Paul de Man is a master at literary analysis. Next to Derrida, he is the great intellectual figure of 1960s deconstructionism (part of "the Yale School"). However, unlike Derrida, his writing is accessible and unambiguous. Too many people dismiss deconstructive analysis for all the wrong reasons (wrong reasons being its association with a whole Derridean school of obscurantism - A. Ronell, G. Spivak, J. Butler, S. Weber, etc. etc.) Paul de Man, however, makes committments to clear writing and achieves the same desired effect as that of the more frustrating thinkers. The essay, "Semiology and Rhetoric", is absolutely crucial for any student of literary theory. It contains the famous, humorous "Archie Bunker example" that so aptly illustrates the inherent tensions of grammar & rhetoric - tensions that make the indeterminancy of meaning unavoidable. The essays on Nietzsche are some of the best and most original I've ever read. He writes an essay covering my favorite piece of Nietzsche's writing: "On Truth and Lying in a Non-Moral Sense." His work on Rousseau is very valuable & informative as well. De Man sets the example of a careful, erudite reader, and few can follow in his footsteps - however, all may appreciate the depth of his thought due to the clarity of his writing.

As is often typical, the book is so much better than the movie. I have had double vision since 1998, and so whenever possible, I read books through audio discs or tapes. Jim Dale reads all of the Potter books and has a very creative voice. I am not sure if it is on purpose, but he can mimic almost all of the major characters from the movie perfectly. He is a joy to listen to. In general, the movie is slavish to the book, except for the beginning. I think that the beginning is delightful for any child, as well as the child within. I was very ill during the time when I was listening to these books and they brought joy and escape from the physical pain in my life. Thank you J. K. Rowling for penning your very imaginative gift.

I have a hard time following epic battles in this author's drawing style, so this was an amazingly fast read for me.

What a pleasant surprise this was. First off, Benderson's eviscerations of the Northwest's dull middle-class culture are vicious and spot-on. Right on! And yet, he doesn't come off as just some terrible New York snob. Rather, he just reveals that maybe, today, the emperor might not be wearing any clothes. And-- and I say this as a Northwesterner-- his enumerations of what is actually interesting about the region are just as accurate. I'm so glad this was written by an actual outsider-- a pleasant contrast to the obnoxious, self-fellating local writers. What I liked so much about it was also that it was very much a narrative with a narrator who had a personality-- in an age of impersonal, realist American fiction, this was a blast of fresh air.

This was my favorite book growing up. It doesn't condescend to its audience, though the intended audience consists of children. It's humorous, touching, and interesting. The main character is appealing to modern girls and modern feminists without losing her own cultural, societal, and ideological bearings, making the book interesting and educational.
Still haven't finished it, but don't think it will live up to the hype.

Read this book my Freshman year of college while in NY. The movie came out shortly after and I loved it. Didn't realize at the time that it was the same author as American Psycho. This was my first Ellis book, and I think a great one to start with. The film is an excellent rendition.

It's a decent book for what it is (something for teenagers and anything that gets them reading is a good thing), however, it's overrated and die hard Twilight fans are nuts.
