This is a dark and strangely off putting book. The characters are dark and twisty and very unlikable at points but the story haunts you well after the book is put back on the self. Its a book that is worth talking about.

Great book about an under-known part of American history. Wilkerson does an excellent (though at times repetitive) job of writing the hows and whys of the Great Migration, while also dispelling common myths about the impact of the migrants on the receiving cities - those who migrated were actually more likely to stay married, less likely to be on welfare and had equivalent, if not more, education, than African Americans who were born in the North. At 500-odd pages, it's a long haul, but definitely worth it.

I wanted to like this book, but I find it hard to enjoy self-pitying and rather pitiful characters such as Quentin. At times I wanted to give him a good, solid kick. The "realistic", un-romanticised version of magic was interesting, quite refreshing, and sometimes disturbing and confronting. I suspect this might be the whole point, but in the end this book missed any magic that would make me return for more.
One of the best theatre autobiographies ever written. Heart-warming, exciting, funny and romantic. A love letter to the Broadway Theatre that, alas, is no more.
I did enjoy this book. I felt the character was developed in a believable manner and it was an entertaining story. Perhaps I've read to many Marian Keyes lately as I could have told you the ending by the time I got through the first couple of chapters. I'm curious what disaster will befall the last sister.

i enjoyed reading it but too unrealistic
As usual, Norton critical editions are the best editions you can get of classic works. This book is one I have a history with. I tried to read it in high school and read about ten pages before screaming with frustration and taking it back, wounded, to the library. I then avoided it for ten years. Now, I have to say, I read it, all of it. It is still difficult, and I know I missed stuff in it, but it is absolutely mesmerizing. The language and technique is of the highest quality, and I almost want to reread it now to capture what I might have missed the first time. Completely recommended, even though it is tough to follow sometimes. Try harder, it's worth it, I found out.

The travel diary companion to the funniest television show I've ever seen. I have become obsessed with Karl Pilkington. And I like it. Read the book, but also watch the show.
