The complete rejection of any pretense of plausability has a long and beautiful history.

** spoiler alert ** You know, I used to have this book rated as a 4- or 5-star book, and marked as one I considered a recommendation for others. I've been re-reading some of the books I thought so much of at a younger age and finding them, well, a bit lacking. This book is no exception. I am struggling to find a justification for using a whole book to tell this thin tale worthy of no more than a fairly interesting short story. Yes, the tale of Prince Peter's supposed murder of his father King Roland (he was framed by the evil magician Flagg) and Peter's subsequent imprisonment and escape, does cover a number of years and actions, but did I not just summarize it in a single sentence? I think that in prior years I was blown away by the idea that Stephen King was writing something that was not a horror novel(!). But that does not take one into the territory of an engaging and noteworthy novel. Sometimes I actually wish that I could step back into the shoes of my younger and less demanding self, who didn't see through boring archetypes such as the rich, fat, indolent king (Henry VIII, anyone?), beautiful queen who is an honorable wife and mother (and therefore must be disposed of), all-evil-with-no-redeeming-qualities-villain Flagg, honorable first son and prince, and jealous, and evil-but-only-in-a-boyish-way-and-not-enough-to-make-you-hate-him younger royal brother. Snore.

A really intriguing read, but not one that I have chosen to repeat.

This book took longer to read page by page than any book I've read in a long time. It's bizarre how so much and so little can happen at the same time on any given page in this book. There were parts I loved, but overall I can't say I loved the book. I liked it. If you want a reading challenge that will keep you engaged, then this might be a good choice. My recommendation is to avoid looking at the family tree, if your version comes with one. It spoils a lot of plot twists. You should keep your own family tree though, as you'll need to refer to it to keep everything straight.

This sequel to Things Not Seen was incredibly disappointing! I found the first book of this trilogy, mesmerizing, yet this one left me unsatisfied.

This was a sad and unique memoir - there are not many memoirs like this about the burgeoning sexuality of teenage girls.

The myths of innovation seeks to dispel common myths around how innovation occurs. It was a hard read end-to-end with little real insight and questionable humor sprinkled throughout. Final take away is that I really don't feel as if I'm any wiser or better off for having read this book.

Eerie, unsettling read (not unlike other Shirley Jackson) but oh, the way she writes the main character. Read this. Now. I read it in one evening. Jackson invented the now common conception of the "creepy village" and how it deals with the outsiders. If you enjoyed The Lottery, you will love this novel with a similar theme - but a delicious twist at the end.

I have read 5-6 of Jodi Picoult's books and this is far and away my favorite. You feel for every character in the story and can't decide what the ending should be.

Fantastik.
