Okay, okay, I'm pathetic. It was a bad read, but there were some interesting slivers of vampire/werewolf mythology you can pick out between the 450 pages of fluff. (Bubblegum fic; 500 pages)

Now almost forgotten, in 1890 Mrs. Frank Leslie was a writer and lecturer better known than any other woman in America. Miriam Florence Follin-Peacock-Squier-Leslie-Wilde, Baroness de Bazus, was a major power in the publishing world when women of her class did not run companies with several hundred employees. Under her leadership Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly became the leading magazine in the country after her third husband's death. Her fourth husband was Willie Wilde, Oscar's brother. Don't bother with Madeleine Stern's other book on Mrs. Frank Leslie, Queen of Publishers' Row. It is a totally butchered excerpt from Purple Passage marketed to libraries for the YA market. It is not easier to read; it's actually more difficult because it was made shorter by removing chunks of text, apparently at random.

I got this book as a Christmas present a long, long time ago ('95 - seems like a while anyway) and I never actually got around to reading it. I never really could get past the beautiful illustrations! I finally sucked it up and read the text, though. Turns out - it was a very informative book.

This is very well done...thirteen characters in Maine revolve around Olive and it is quite intriquing. I had read the author's other book Amy and Isabelle and I think tis is a much better book. I recommend it. It will keep your interest and is a slice of life in rural Maine. Olive herself is not particularly a likable woman but by the end you do care for her. Good summer read.

I heard about this book from a fellow patient at physical therapy and my curiosity was piqued. It has a questionnaire that you take to find out if you are a carb addict. I scored in the severe addict range, big shocker. The book explains that those who are sensitive to carbs have an excess of insulin released (from eating too many carbs), which makes you think you're hungry (for carbs) when you're really not, and disrupts the production of serotonin, which helps you to feel full and satisfied. The idea is that you restrict your carb intake to one meal a day, so that you don't get the constant triggering of insulin over-production. It all makes a lot of sense to me. I've been on the diet for 2 weeks so far, with good results. I've lost weight, but I've also felt more energetic and less tired than I have in a long, long time. I guess time will tell how I fare with it in the long run.

Learning about the kinds of maple syrup was interesting. The essays got kind of negative toward the end of the book. I'm not sorry I read this book, but one is enough.

I am not one to re-read a book, as I feel life is too short and there are too many good books to waste time reading something you've already read. That being said, I've read a lot of books in the past 18 months, at least 100, so trying to remember the details from Hourglass was next to impossible. There were too many pieces that were missing from my memory, which made Timepiece a struggle for me. Even now there are a lot of unanswered questions. I probably would've liked this much better if I'd have taken the time to re-read Hourglass, so my rating probably isn't a fair one, but it is what it is.

This is my favorite book as a kid. I was always checking this book out from my elementary school library. The school library actually told my mom I needed to let other kids check the book out, lol.
