What an amazing story!

A small book that's still pretty big on story. It's well written and based on true events, so it's like a history lesson, condensed. The only part of it I found slightly less than perfect was the way each of the many separate stories were layered on top of one another. It's the combined story of a group of Japanese immigrant women ("picture brides") and each have their own storyline, but they're often all told at once. It's still a great little book, but sometimes that method of storytelling gave me a bit of a headache. I think I was yearning for separate stories, a la The Joy Luck Club. Still very much worth the read.

So we left the 1970s for the 1850s and read about Kirsten's journey from Sweden to Minnesota. Poor Kirsten gets lost and then her best friend Marta dies of cholera on the riverboat. And then Kirsten has to leave her doll behind in the family trunks that have to be stored because her family can't afford a wagon to carry their belongings from the riverfront to their uncle's farm. And to top it off, she doesn't even speak English. These are the things that troubled Abby. When playing with our Kirsten doll, she often sighs and says, "Poor Marta." Abby also noted that Kirsten isn't as brave as Julie. We'll see if the rest of the stories change her mind. Poor Kirsten!

This is my general Lord of the Rings trilogy review: What can you even say about Tolkein? The man was a linguistic genious, literally. He created entire languages, and what's more, he created vibrant and fully-realized cultures to go with them. I love that he borrowed so heavily from Norse myth to create a sort of mythic Northern European pre-history, colored with Germanic/Anglo-Saxon imagry. The hobbits themselves are my least favorite aspect of the books, which I know is close to heresy. I understand that they're a symbol of childlike purity and innocence and the pastoral ideal and all of that, but they're a bit too good to be fun. Trolls also bore me incredibly (although that might be backlash from the movies and Gimli's role as a profoundly unfunny source of "comic" relief and zippy one-liners). The elves are snotty and stiff, but at least they are intriguing; I like the fading, sad feel that they have. The Men are, as they were likely intended by the author, the most interesting in their flawed natures and ability to step up to the plate when needed. I like Aragorn a lot. He could have been very irritating, but is saved by his hesitancy to rule, despite his birthright, and fear of his own weakness. I like him the best becuase he combines the best features Tolkein gives to Men and elves, with very few of their downfalls (namely pride). I love the Ring and all it's not-very-subtle methaphors for the seduction of power and evil. His writing feels more like mythology than a sci-fi novel. It reads like something that was handed down from generation to generation, and that gives it such a unique quality that other authors have tried and largely failed to emulate.

Well written, compelling, disturbing, historic, . . . I've never read anything quite like this. The details were incredible and difficult. Unbroken is a great title. I can't believe Louis lived so long after what he endured. I was touched by the reaction of the prisoners to their captors once they were released at the end of the war. This book made me interested in the author. She is living her own life of resilience in the face of difficulty.
This book was very entertaining, encompassing everything from sorrow and regret to acceptance and love. I think it is great that a male author can delve into the true feelings of a man who is suffering from a loss, and who is lost. Joe Hill is very written. Ignatius Perrish awakens one morning after a drunken stupor to find he has grown a set of horns. In the beginning it appears that he is an unemployed low-life alcoholic who has no motivation to turn his life on a path more promising. He lives with a girl, Glenna, he doesn't see a future with, and he is disliked by many of his peers. Throughout the story the reader experiences a pure relationship and the catalyst for Iggy's behavior. In the end Ignatius Perrish is revealed as the forlorn underdog who comes to the understanding that evil really is a necessity on this planet. The story line was thorough and executed very well. There was a wide variety of characters and scenarios that almost every teenager and young adult can connect with or relate to.
I love my copy of this book because none of the pages had been cut yet. I felt like that really did make it mine.

This was a download from Audible* I really enjoyed this one. Picoult's writing style makes you care for her characters and what happens to them from the onset of picking up the book until the last word on the page, or in my case from my headphones. I love the way she deals with contemporary issues from various perspectives. This book specifically dealt with issues regarding fertility/infant loss/embryo ownership, Gay/Lesbian rights, and divorce, from two very different perspectives. Since I listened to this one on audio it had the accompanying soundtrack throughout. The song lyrics were fine, but the vocal performance could have been better on the songs. It just seemed a little hokey. I actually preferred the narrator of Zoe's parts singing voice to that of the artist who performed the songs. Overall, worth the read! Especially if you enjoy Picoult. One of my favorites of her works now.
