3.75/4.0 This is an absolutely horrifying book. I am not even sure how I continued to listen to it. At some points it even made me a little sick to my stomach. I can't even believe that Karen survived what happened to her. Now, after reading it, I understand how she did. She coped by forming 17 alternate personalities, or "alters". I found this book fascinating and I am sure that is why I finished it. I gave it 3.75 out of 4 because it did drag a little. I thought that it was very interesting to watch the evolution of Dr. Baer's relationship with Karen and her alters. It really was touching to watch her become s whole person.

Not usually a fantasy or vampire fan, but found this series to be a fun read. Once I started I couldn't finish. The writing may not be the most literary but the pace of the action kept the pages turning. The same could be said for all four books in the series. The movie on the other hand was almost like something different, unrecognizable. I was disappointed.

A Thousand Acres is a severely underrated Shakespeare adaptation. I know they are a dime a dozen but this one is of great value. Like Kirosawa's Ran, A Thousand Acres takes the story of King Lear and brings it to another setting with startling results. In A Thousand Acres, a father must leave his farmland to his daughters. And that's all you need to know to realize how it quite simply parallels King Lear. Of course, Jane Smiley has to pick her spots and the societal situations she wants to present as focuses of study in her narrative. In this case, sex plays a prominent role. It is a weapon, a fear, a desire, etc. I believe, as a reasonably well-read Shakespeare fan, when it comes to his extremely popular works, one relates to Romeo and Juliet and then Hamlet and then King Lear as one grows older and older. I am in the stage of my life where I am lost somewhere in between the world of Hamlet and King Lear, but A Thousand Acres presents ideas that are not in Lear at all that I find very enriching and that in turn help me understand what Shakespeare is saying in King Lear. Still, I like to think I am quite some years off from fully embracing the story of King Lear or A Thousand Acres as partly my own. The point is, she uses King Lear, but she does not rehash it. The story is new and fresh and very intelligent. It is nicely considered a noble attempt. I think it is a triumph.

Awesome pictures, interesting stories. Just read about Yosemite and Yellowstone so far. Fabulous book! Wonderful pictures, wonderful stories. I gather that it is repetitive for those who have already watched the mini-series, but that wasn't a problem for me. The most eye-opening aspect of the book is the documentation of the constant, CONSTANT attempts by citizens, corporations, and politicians to destroy the parks in order to make money off of them. Some of the stories are heart breaking as the park preserves a small piece of what was destroyed--like the Redwoods and Smoky Mountains. The Grand Canyon almost had multiple dams built in its side canyons. I know I don't agree with every last thing some environmentalists want, but how can society stomach some of what we do to blissfully maintain our materialistic lifestyle? This same debate is happening about state parks in Utah right now. National and State Parks have far more value than just money. I have some new heroes now in some of those who fought to establish and maintain our national parks. Stolen from another review: “For the first time in human history, land--great sections of our natural landscape--was set aside, not for kings or noblemen or the very rich, but for everyone, for all time.” -Ken Burns

I read this book on and off for about a month - not because it was bad but because this was a book to be savored. The translation was absolutely beautiful and suited the very Gothic tone of the novel.

** spoiler alert ** I really enjoyed this book. It had great insight and I loved the story...it could happen! Very interesting. I am updating my 'edit' after watching the movie... I still enjoyed the book better than the movie, and like friends who have read the book first or watch the movie first, you usually like whichever you did first, better. That holds true for me, but for different reasons. I like the book better because I liked the story better. I liked how the author drew from experiences the main character had throughout his entire life, and mixed it all up. I also liked that the two main characters remained friends. I thought that was one of the key parts of the story that the author was trying to portray - the friendship of these two, and how all of these 'street kids' really stuck together. Lastly, pertaining to the girl, she exhonerated him in the end. She proved that he was telling the truth on the show and freed him of the guilt he thought he had over killing her father in an attempt to save her. She redeemed him. The movie did not portray any of this, which, in my opinion, were the key notes the author was telling. Still, loved the book! Bought and will re-read!

I really liked the way that this story unfolded. While it was written for young adult readers, I often find myself reading book to check for appropriateness in my classroom. This story is centered around a girl who goes to a party between her 8th and 9th grade year. At this party something horrific happens that she can't tell anyone about. As a result, she finds herself beginning high school friendless. As the story unwinds, we find out the "whole story" and we follow her throughout her journey to face the friends and problems that she feels like destroyed her.
I couldn't put this book down. I like the combination of romance and mystery. I would recommend it.

Loved this book. I would recommend it to any parent. Of course with any book, there were some things I did not agree with, but really loved most of the ideas and concepts. I look forward to reading another book by these same authors.
