Cover blurb: The Daedalus Mission 2 The planet called Dendra seemed too good to be true. One vast forest world, marvelous climate, few dangerous beasts, a balanced hospitable ecology all should have spelled out a good place for a human colony. But the original survey team had registered doubts, listed it as borderline without further explanation. Nevertheless the politicians had okayed it and a colony had been landed there... and a hundred and fifty Earthly years had passed without anyone hearing from it. Now the recontact vessel Daedalus was coming to check up and they found the climate as marvelous as before, the forest green and friendly, and the colony an inexplicable disaster. There was a biological and psychological puzzle that had to be solved for the sake of all human worlds and for the crew of the Daedalus it was either crack it or crack up.

Weir weaves a fascinating story of Elizabeth's life, using primary sources with flair and a keen sense of the dramatic. Elizabeth, write Allan Bennet, was "not distinguished by her talents so much as, unlike her sisters, her ability to use them." She was tempestuous, hot-tempered, passionate, at once lonely and aloof, the object of hatred and love by a wide array of religious sentiments, yet revered above all by her realm. At times, I have to wonder, as I read this book, what she would have done had she not had so many marriages to waffle on: the King of Spain, a German nobleman, her court suitors, Essex during his meltdown even. But lest anyone think she was flaky, remember her position of power and her tenuous hold over the Catholics in England, as well as those to the north. Elizabeth was brilliant when it came to politics, just as she was at flirtation, and it perhaps suggests something worthwhile to see the two of them so interchangeable in her life story.
I read this book years ago, and I liked it. I remember the anecdote relating Wittgenstein's figuring out how to fix a machine that had broken. At the time, Wittgenstein was living and teaching in a small town. How he came to be there I don't remember. I decided to write about this now because of a "sermon" I heard yesterday (at our Unitarian Universalist fellowship) about the human brain. Our brain has evolved, and we still have brain functions like those of lizards, like those of small furry mammals, like those of monkeys, and like those of dolphins. Unfortunately, I am tired at the moment and not thinking as clearly as I might.
I liked the story being told from two alternating viewpoints. Slow to get started, but picked up quickly and was overall a quick read.
Another fun installment in the series. I love the common sense and morals included in each story.

Wonderful growing-up story in the former colony of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Lots of humor, lots of bittersweet family stories.

I first read the Earthsea trilogy in grade school, but my appreciation for it has grown as I've gotten older. I'm not sure why the series gets put in the children/young adults section when I would say it is for mature readers. Mature kids, sure... but the experience of reading it is the same for an adult, I would say. This book is a much quieter, bittersweet and contemplative read than most fantasy novels. Most of the journey is inward and personal, rather than a big explosive epic. One of the main themes is taking maturity for bad decisions.
Easy short stories - some a tad disturbing. But I love the writer and the language he uses. I plan on reading all of his books
This book was lovely. Yolanda is such a great character. Despite her hardships in life and being out-of-the-norm and teased, it just makes her braver and stronger. The story is great! It really reminds you that sometimes younger people are right. Also that you should try to understand people: I really felt felt for Andrew! I'd really recommend this to pretty much anyone. It was a great book.

Me encantó este libro. Los personajes y la trama estaban tan bien escritos que literalmente me perdí en este libro hasta que lo terminé.
