My only criticism would be the fact that Zirin bends the stick on Bonds. Bonds took steroids whether he knew it or not is irrelevant. I would like to hear what other people have to say about him being admitted to the hall of fame?

Welp, that was a let-down... most scandalous part of the book: the use of the f-word, the c-word, and the proper name for male genetalia! Shocking Otherwise it's an interesting read, with compelling points of veiw on the social situation in England at around the time the book was written... whenever that was.

Nowhere near as good as the arc contained in the first volume; but I think part of that might have to do with my having read the Sentry TPB right before I read this one. So, I was possibly on Sentry overload going into this one.

** spoiler alert ** This is one of the Alan Dean Foster books that I decided to read again to see how it matched up with my memories of first reading them when I was young. Some of them were more disappointing than others, but this one stood out. The book starts off with its protagonist trapped and hopeless, then goes into a flashback of how he got to be in that situation. By the time the story catches up with 'the present,' it doesn't match the text from the beginning - aspects of his situation are slightly different, and he's able to escape from his confinement with little difficulty. He still has problems, of course, but the discrepancies were very jarring. Was this poor editing, or did Foster try to draw the reader into the story and then cheat his way out of the corner he'd backed himself into, hoping no one would notice? Neither one is excusable to me.

I was going to give this four stars as I'd remembered really enjoying it. Then I realized I couldn't recall one story in the collection. Humph.

This is one of those beautiful books in which nothing much happens and yet you never want it to end. I could not get these simple characters out of my head and although I read this book about 7 years ago, I think of it often. Anyone who liked Willa Cathers "Death Comes For The Archbishop" will also love this book.

I actually liked this book, but then, I loved writing my master's thesis, so there's obv. something wrong with me.
Great story, great characters, great time and place settings. This book is unforgettable! A must read.
Finished this one today, this was just so so for me. For some reason I am having a hard time getting into Joy Fielding. At least I enjoyed the story line.
Interesting topic of study. I wish the author spent a little more time in each country, and delved more into their historical differences, as he did in Moldovia. But altogether an intruiging idea. Wish I got to conduct this study.
