There are a lot of other reviews that talk about how great this book is. I have to agree with all those 5 star and 4 star reviews. This book is really well constructed. I rated it 3 stars because I found that I wasn't very interested in the story, in fact I wanted to rate it 2 stars but I that doesn't take into account how well the book is written and how interesting the story is. I settled on 3 stars but I'll never read it again and it will be a long time before I approach another military romance.

Stanley was walking down the street in the Village the night before his birthday in 1998 when a car full of thugs pulled up next to him to demand he accompany them to the nearest ATM. When they saw how much he had in his account, they decided they would keep him until the next day, when they'd be able to get more money than the $200 limit. What they didn't realize was that he was an Assistant US District Attourney. Seriously. Not only the story of his 24-hour capture, "The Birthday Party" is also the story of how they eventually found the culprits once they let Stanley escape. "Here's a guy, ya know, they have a kidnapping and they're offering, 'Hey, by the way, ya want a sandwich? Oral sex? Anything?' Ya know, we sorta looked at each other going, 'How weird is that?'" But from my eye contact and the way I handled myself during the interview, Burroughs was convinced, and by the time they were finished all he said to Wich was, "Come on, let's go get 'em."

I'm on page 100ish... Her writing style is distractingly glib and with a repetitious cadenc, humor sometimes funny sometimes just looking down her nose too much, but the underlying story is a good one. Being a pet lover, I liked the descriptions of the contribution in their lives of the poodle and her cat Bob and Betty her hyper dog. Corny but good stuff! I finished it on saturday. After about page 180 I liked it a lot more because she turned a corner and became friends with the locals, those relationships gave the book more depth and I found myself staying up to read more and laughing out loud. Nice postlude, like the trailer on a movie. Liked the comparison of the 2D postcard image of living in the country vs. the real live 3D reality version.

Supergods is a great history and analysis of comic books. Morrison does a great job of weaving his own experiences with comic books and his eventual entry into the industry in the book. Maybe reviews have confused the autobiographical portions as being merely autobiographical. In reality what he's still doing the history and analysis thing, but presenting it from an insiders perspective. Even his anecdotes that seem to have nothing to do with comics or their history are eventually related back to the main themes of the piece (ie. the title). Without giving too much away, I'll say that Morrison breaks down each era of comics (golden, silver...), then breaks them down even further into their respective decades. He examines the major themes in each era and relates them back to historical attitudes and views of the period. This approach may sound dry but Morrison's confidence and expertise as a writer really shine in these moments. Overall, this is the sort of book anyone with a passing interest in the history of comics should read. I only have a passing knowledge of Morrison's writing in comics, but he is a definitely a writer with a lot to say.

I don't usually read religious books or non-fiction, but I am so glad my book club added The Price We Paid to our list this year. Andrew D. Olsen did an incredible amount of research for this book, using journals to tell the true, personal stories of dozens of the pioneers. It is a heartbreaking story wrought with several important spiritual and philosophical questions. I did not care too much for Olsen's style of writing but, as mentioned before, I'm not really one for non-fiction. I do, however, think this is a book every Mormon should read and a history that should not be forgotten.
Started this series...for the first time...at the beginning of the summer. Almost there! Not surprised at all that this series is being used as a text in some college classes...there's a lot in there.

Pretty good little murder mystery which leaves you to your own imagination at the end.

I think the series still spends far too much time rehashing past events and consequently the books are far too long. I want yo know how it ends, but I feel that if the authors keep up in thus vein, by the time I get yo the final book, I'll only heed to actually read 10% of it. The remaining 90% will be recap.
