Not my favorite book in the world. Definitely need a lot of time to read this and understand all of the little subtle jokes and "clue" moments. Tends to be dry in places and all I really liked was when Esther was narrating otherwise I had a hard time staying interested. Dickens is not exactly a favorite author if mine. All I really have to say is exigency, exigency, exigency.

Though the stories themselves may have been a bit "out there" Angela Carters prose is beautiful, and I could read it all day.

Took me over a month to complete the collection, but it was totally worth it. Each tale was equally as enthralling as the previous making it very hard to put down between chapters. Doyle's masterful writing could hold its own against any high caliber writers of today, but when you consider the time period in which the stories were written (A Study in Scarlet being published in 1887), it's even more amazing.

Why do people keep recommending this book? It's awful. I realize that a simple, emotion-focused "defense" of Christian faith is attractive, but it is so clear here that Lewis is writing to comfort a war-ravaged Britain that he would probably quake in horror if he knew that people in a peaceful, "progressive" society were so often presented this book as if it had some meaning or value beyond that which the Christian faith offers through its own scripture. Hell, the title itself is so wrenchingly self-righteous it makes me hate it before opening the cover. Just read the Gospels.
I have read a number of Tim Cahill’s books, and enjoyed them all. This one is no exception. Cahill is a travel writer who actually goes places and tells you what he sees, as well as what he feels about; he writes well and persuasively to boot. This is a compilation of articles, largely from travel and adventure magazines. A number of pieces deal with a trip to Irian Jaya (New Guinea); these include a horrific trek through the swamps to the homes of recent cannibals. These folks live on platforms 50’ above the forest floor, to escape the mosquitoes. Another related piece deals with malaria, which he got on the trip. Several articles deal with sea kayaking, including a trip to the Queen Charlotte Islands off BC, and some private islands off Nicaragua. He also covered the world spear fishing contest in southern Peru, which was hilarious. One of the most engaging pieces dealt with his participation in Montana (his home) search and rescue when a hunter is lost in a -30 degree storm. Overall, a wonderful read.

If I could hand one book out to everyone I know who will ever have or ever was a child, this is it. The best introduction to basic manners ever. Plus crashing planes and alligators and all kinds of nonsense.

A good history - of a Twentieth Century tragedy. A very strong sense of the Hungarian experience conveyed. It needs better maps, though!
