More like 4.7, really, but gonna round it up to five. First off my recommendation would be, to someone who's just beginning this series and is interested with it, to buy all three books; because as soon as you finish The Hunger Games, you will want to pick up the next installment and continue reading like there's no tomorrow. I'm looking for a place to begin. I guess I will start off by saying that The Hunger Games is unlike any YA I have read so far in terms of execution and character development and consistency. The book is interesting enough to keep you glued to it, because something is always happening, even if it's just seeing Katniss, the heroine and narrator, struggle with seemingly little things that are happening to her. She is a well-built characters, although sometimes I found myself put off because she's a bit cold, but I attribute that to the build-up of a good character because it does show she has a consistent personality. Each of the characters, even if they said only a few lines and appeared in a few chapters, like Prim for example, is well-built as well, enough to make you get a sense of them. Now, the action is raw and moving, and exposed just the right way to make you see how horrible the competition and everything pertaining to it really is; I confess I teared up quite a few times throughout the book, which is something really hard for me to do. Through Katniss's narration, I saw the ugly side of the Capitol, hidden behind the pretty dresses, the interviews, the seemingly comfortable life. And let's not forget the Games. Katniss's struggle, as well as Peeta's struggle, is raw and quite realistically presented. I absolutely adored the romance build-up, because it was slow and Katniss was confused at what was going on. Which, in turn, seemed all the more real to me. I liked that, even though Katniss was prepared for survival, knew enough of survival, she lacked in other areas; so I was pleased by how Collins developed her. She was quite realistically presented, and I enjoyed that very much. I have to say, I liked Peeta as well, and I liked how we readers get to see him through Katniss's eyes and question him like she does, but there is enough room for us to exert our judgment on him without being biased by her views. Without giving much spoilers away, I'll just have to say someone told me to read this book with high expectations, and I have to say it almost met them. The reason I didn't give the book five stars, solid, was because I found Katniss to be unbelievably lucky; many things turned out very well for her and though I was rooting for her, somewhere in the back of my mind it didn't sit quite well with me to see this. Things don't always have a positive outcome; but the book is good enough, written and exposed well enough, for this not to bother me quite as much as it would have. This is one of the most enjoyable and entertaining reads I have read this year and perhaps one of my favorites. It's an excellent read, and I really recommend it.

I enjoyed reading *about* this book as much as, if not more than, reading the actual novel, since I, like most everyone else, know her best for Pride and Prejudice. Persuasion is rather different from P&P so I can see how readers might be disappointed if they expect a similar period piece. (I think I might have been. I hate to sound so pedestrian but watching a film version helped.) But after getting into the story and how it's structured, I appreciate that Persuasion is pretty genius, given the characters and what they represent, not to mention how they represent it. Reading about and analyzing her final full novel comes naturally for what is generally accepted as Austen's "mature" work, not to mention what tons of women (and maybe some men?) can identify as chick-lit without the academic exercise. I read a Barnes & Noble Classics edition that contains miscellaneous information for your reading pleasure (great to get your feet wet for that afore-mentioned academic exercise), including essays and reviews contemporary with the book's popularity back in the late 19th / early 20th century.

Fun, fast thriller with a great premise, and interesting plot. Since my husband is a writer, this was very interesting to digest. The suthor clearly did his research....

Dear Mrs. Clare, As I put the book down, I thought to myself, "I do not have any recollection of what I just read". Don't get me wrong, the book was fantastic. There was just so much talking and the action waited until the very last minute. The good thing about this was: At least the talking didn't bore me. My eyes didn't get tired of reading. Everything was fast paced. The whole book was. I liked how everything turned out in the end. Frankly, I wasn't too happy about the end because now I have to wait until May to figure out what else happens. But I enjoyed this book. It wasn't what I was expecting, really. The reader got a lot more of Simon's life than our usual characters. I felt closer to Isabelle than I ever have in the other books yet, I felt like I still didn't know Alec or Magnus. The plot twists in this book was well thought out and really did surprise me when it came down to it. We are introduced to a new villan and the new villan's background amazed me. I had always wonder who Lilith was whenever people would say "Lilith's Children" or whatever it is that they're called. I'm happy to say that I wasn't left screaming at the top of my lungs because I couldn't have the next book immediatly (Like I did when I finished Twilight a few years back). If you were one of those people who read New Moon and skimmed through the pages of the book JUST to make sure Edward came back, then you probably should just leave the book at where it ends and not go on reading Jace's letter to Clary UNTIL you have the next book in your hands. A little part is screaming inside me because I want the book but, I'm pretending I never read Jace's letter. I know this seems like a whole crap load of pro's and why I love this book so much but you're also probably asking yourself, "Why in the hell did she give this book three stars then?!" It's because it was so damn fast paced, I felt like I'm still not close to Clary or Jace but best friends with Simon, whom isn't even the main character. I also gave it three stars because I felt like the series should've stopped where CoG ended. This book just seemed like a "Eh, this sounds like a good piece of work, let's just throw it out there just for the hell of it". I just feel like there wasn't a point to it. I obviously won't feel this way once I read the next two books but for now, three stars is where it will remain.

Muriel is everything you wouldn’t expect in being Satan’s daughter. She lives reasonably without any financial influence from her father and is striving to own her bar, but perhaps the most intriguing fact is that she’s still a virgin. Much to her father’s disappointment, she’s not like the rest of her rebellious siblings out stirring up trouble, yet she’s really the only child of his that he’s grown “attached” to. Their father/daughter relationship continues it’s growth when Satan’s seat of power is threatened by an unknown adversary and puts Muriel’s life at risk. Muriel is a fighter and was taught by one of the best, so this girl isn’t ready to give up without a fight and she won’t have to do it alone. Muriel has fallen hard for a guy she barely knows yet he seems determined to know more about her and protect her. He’s hot, he’s strong, and he’s full of secrets. Could he be ‘the one’? With a lot of humor, romance, and some twisted parenting, Ms. Langlais gives readers Hell from another perspective. For Muriel, this is where she grew up and a place where many of it’s inhabitants are misunderstood by others. Told from Muriel’s point of view, readers are taken on a once in a lifetime journey to Hell and back with introductions to some really fascinating characters. One of my favorites is Bambi, Muriel’s incubus older sister. Bambi may be a stripper and scoffs at the mere mention of the word love, but she’s extremely supportive of Muriel as any big sister should be. Although there are some extremely hot scenes with enough power to give anyone a great visual, there are some mushy moments too that I wasn’t as fond of. The action came to an abrupt end leaving lots of questions, but this is only book one, so now it’s on to book two and the continuation of this adventure with Muriel and company.

Dreary view of marriage and fulfillment.
My first Kindle read - and my first Sherlock Holmes! I liked it, though I felt that the end was a bit messy, as in the author had only a set number of pages in which to finish, & so some of the loose ends weren't tied up very satisfactorily.

I love this story, although I've always found Pangloss' philosophy extremely annoying. And Cunegonde is actually a bitch. Why do I love this?
If you are looking for a moderately good suspense novel, that is lighthearted and fairly predictable, then give this one a go. Great author, but not one of his better works.
