This is a book I'd heard much about, but never read. A.S. Byatt makes you work hard; it's not a book to pick up for a quick 10 minutes just before going to sleep! Unfortunately I didn't have much time for reading due to pressure of work, and that's what I did, often leaving it aside for several days. I got completely bogged down in the exchange of letters and sidetracked to Barbara Pym as light relief for a few days too! Don't get me wrong, Byatt is an incredible writer and frighteningly clever. I really enjoyed the way she'd got the 19th-century tone so right, and the pastiche Victorian poetry is fantastic (I admit that I skipped most of Ash's turgid poems, but I liked Christabel's Emily-Dickinson-like ones and thought it was interesting that her long Melusine poem was clearly influenced by Ash's style). There were parts where I got really wrapped up in the 19th-century story, though most of the modern characters left me a bit cold, and sometimes the jokey campus novel (especially the farce in the graveyard) didn't seem to sit well with the rest of the story. And I found the rather twee afterword with Ash and the child a bit of a letdown after the power and subtlety of the novel -- it seemed as if some marketing type told Byatt she had to have a happy ending!

I had a tough time getting into this book but I'd re-read the entire thing just for the ending. Simply amazing!

Generally a good read. Nothing monumental. Similar themes to White Teeth and Kite Runner.

Another good book to give one a better feel for the use of statistics in popular debate.

There are good books. There are books where you can observe that, by most standards, they have achieved outstanding new limits. I can still criticize my lack of sensibility to them, when I question whether I should read each and every a good book. Then there are books like this, that draw you in before you have time to think of standards. And never let go. This book, unlike the first, takes a decidedly darker and more mature tone than the other. The first is unique for Jorg's voice and the original perspective it offers, yet, startlingly, there is considerably less lawlessness this time, as Jorg undergoes the necessary growing-up process. He is neither redeemed, nor cliched - shame on the doubters - rather, he loses his purpose after killing Renar. Thus, the many a new piece of him that might need fitting on the larger frame, start losing that synchronization that allowed Jorg to always blast through obstacles with "hunches, bets, hope, and luck." As it is, on the way he becomes a rather formidable swordsman and amateur alpinist. Katherine develops into a new and complicated player. Without giving too much away I can say that her story brought to mind, at some point, echoes of the "Song of the Nibelungs", The Nibelungenlied, namely, of Kriemhild. Most of the story, much like in the previous book takes place "four ears earlier", when Jorg is 14, three months after conquering the Renar Highlands. Slowly doubts have started to "sour his amusements" and, when Gog nearly burns him in his bed, he takes him to seek help from a fire-mage in the Danelands. The "now" and his 18-year-old self slowly interweave with the past, and a few burnt pages of Katherine's diary leading up to the startling conclusion of his becoming and the uneven battle awaiting at the Haunt's gates. How I waited for this book

Interesting, would have been much better if he had just written it like a normal book and left out the multi-perspective/non-linear/symbols. Seemed like a reach, like he was doing it just to be different.

This isn't the place to wade into T.C. Boyle's body of work, but if you already like him, there are some good stories here true to his style.

Okay, it was funny sure. A collection of stories really, tied together with Disch's narrative, it flowed well I guess, but it just wasn't for me. Interesting concept too… just not played out well…

Excellent. Compelling. Took me to a whole new world - and showed both sides of it.
