I enjoyed reading Gwen Roland's essays about her experiences while living on the Louisiana swamp. Roland certainly has a gift for descriptive prose. I could picture her life on the swamp and she made me appreciate her love of nature and the characters of the Atchafalaya swamp. She also gives a brief update on why and how she came to leave that lifestyle and where she went from there. A quick, pleasant book.
Surprisingly readable, considering how dry and academic it could have been. Instead, it's both intelligent and accessible, and my only real complaint is that since it was published over a decade ago it's missing a lot of important modern horror films. Otherwise, highly recommended.

The dead have no secrets in this book. Masters captures in just a few lines each person's identity. What they say and how they say it is the minimalist characterization for each name in succession. Verses not written in rhyme, just giving a brief glimpse of insight into each corpses thoughts. The ways that the deceased townsfolk are interconnected are often surprising-clashes emphasized by the fact that they all end up buried right next to their neighbors in life. Brilliant!

What a darling book. A twist on the Cinderella story that makes you smile and cheer and worry if she will live happily ever after.

This is a story about a boy who plays basketball with the big boys for the first time. In the beginning his confidence level is low because he is so little. By the end of the story his confidence is high because he scored the winning point. I would suggest this story to my students who like sports or students who have low self confidence.
The first time I read this book, I hated it. I think because I read it when I was in the 5th grade, and therefore too young to appreciate the skill and beauty that the book is written with. Bronte's Gothic tale is a masterpiece. It is haunting and vivid. If you haven't read because you are afraid it will be dense and stuffy, fear not. It is an excellent novel by one of the best women authors.
