This book was beautifully slow, like a balmy weekend morning. I lingered over passages, put it down for days at a time, went back to passages I thought were particularly striking. It's amazing to find a book like this.

This story was beautifully written as all of Picoult's are and I finished it in 3 days. I just couldn't put it down.

By far my favorite of Gaiman's novels. Plus, the audiobook version of this is fantastic -- George Guidall has the perfect voice and attitude for conjuring Shadow's slow, mysterious slog across America.

Dante's The Divine Comedy provides a rough framework for Vonnegut's story which audaciously asks and answers questions about fate, free will, the indifference of God, and humanity's purpose in the universe. Although full of irony and humor, I found the beginning and middle of The Sirens of Titan to be less personal and thus less compelling than Slaughterhouse-Five . Fortunately, as all the pieces come together, the story culminates with a poignant and impactful ending that more than makes up for any minor deficiencies. Highly recommended.
God, John Green is amazing.

1939 Caldecott Medal Winner Fantastic black and white illustrations in this book. It looks like it was done with ink and brush, with tiny dots for shading. The story is about how Mei Li sneaks out with her brother San Yu to attend the big New Years celebration and tries to prove in various ways that there are things for girls to do at the fair. It's dated, but I didn't feel like it was particularly insulting to Chinese people--it sounded like the author based it on a real little girl whom he knew at the time, and that the events reflected a Chinese New Year celebration of the period. I don't know if the "candle-top pigtail" is a stereotype or not, but I guess it could sound a little demeaning if you're looking for that. Overall, I was mainly disappointed with the message that girls can go out and have fun sometimes, but ultimately can only be "princesses of the home." While Mei Li is shown doing some things just as well as her brother, and often, in fact, being smarter than her brother, she still has to go back home in the end to the only place where she is allowed any kind of authority. In its favor, though, Mei Li did see women performing at the fair, so there are obviously some women in this world who can express themselves! I would probably read this book to a kid, but include some discussion of gender roles.
Not usually a fan of novellas -- find them too short -- but this one and book 1 were a nice way to spend a couple hours. I'm hoping there will be a third book for their friend Morgan.

An interesting but somewhat tedious listing of the Native American interpretations of the Constellations. Useful to read. Just not exceptionally engaging.
