I loved this book, but it's a brutal bastard. I don't think I'll ever re-read it--not because it's not brilliantly written, it is. But because it takes a huge emotional toll on the reader. It absolutely kicked my ass. I'd recommend everybody read it; it's that good. But be prepared to be emotionally drained by the end.

When I first heard about this book I wasn't interested. But when my sister read it and fell in love with it and bought the first two books for Christmas for me I couldn't help but fall in love. In a way it reminds me of Scott Westerfield's writing, but that could be that it deals with the future, has hovercrafts, and is written with a girls as the main character in first person. I am anxiously waiting for the third book. I hate when I have to wait for a book to come out!

Hmmm...how to describe this book. You have to read it to get the gist of the different character-types, but it's set in the same type of setting, as The Lord of the Rings. You see some similarities to characters in that series...not a lot, just enough to niggle at your memory. There's some biblical-type references, with Satan and his minions, Hell, etc, and The One, sent to send him back to Hell, where he's escaping. Three young men have been chosen, by Satan, to disciple, yet they have higher callings. Basically, it's a story of how Satan doubles his efforts on those chosen by God.

Loved this hsitorical mystery that takes place in Ottoman Istanbul. I must if you are going.
I loved this book. It made me want to get out and hike the Appalachian Trail! I thought that it was funny but also enjoyed some history and geology as well.

I finally finished this book. I had been meaning to read it for years, and then I started reading it aloud with someone and we fell out of that routine, and then I finally sat down and finished it in a few days. I will only be repeating what everyone else in the world has already said, but it is an absolutely amazing and inspiring story. My only issue is that the writing can be a bit overdone sometimes, and sometimes the story unfolded in an almost too dramatic style. I wasn't sure if this was just reflective of Mortenson's personality (I suspect that it is, in which case, it is simply the accurate portrayal of a very romantic and passionate man who has a knack for seeing the drama in a situation) or if it was the co-author's overlay. I am anxious to read "Stone Into Schools" to learn about Mortenson's experiences in Afghanistan. He wrote it with a different co-author, I think, so I'm interested to see if the style is different, and, of course, I'm eager to know how he navigated his way through Afghanistan in what seems like, even more than the communities in Pakistan where he worked, a truly impossible situation. There is no other word to use besides "inspired" when describing how I felt while reading this book. I completely agree with Mortenson that education is the key to strengthening communities while ending extremism. Of course, this theory falls apart if we look at Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, Newt Gingrich, Lou Dobbs, and the whole slew of extremist folks in the US. In that case, I would add on that we have to look at the relational psychology and dynamics of these people -- how do they relate to people? How do they separate their own views from others'? How do they see themselves in relationship to others? This, I believe, is where Mortenson is truly worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize. He immediately understood that any larger changes have to be based on the trust and warmth of one-on-one relationships. Yes, education is a basic human right, but it is this finer component of relational connectiveness that distinguishes Mortenson from most politicians.
Not as good as I remembered, although the illustrations were gorgeous. Still, a fun read nonetheless.

An African American living in a city during the 1950s and his life. I thought that it had interesting points of views on things. I liked it because it did not take that much knowledge of Elizibeathen language. It surpassed my expectations, but not by a huge amount. Again, I had to read this for school.

I guess I should play fair and examine the female contribution to the beat generation........

Just plain dumb. Held my interest enough to finish it, but it was pretty short. Not much dimension to either character and a silly premise. Would definetly not recommend this one. I picked this up on a whim as I was in the library and needed something quick to read while waiting on something...and I had just finished another book by this author that I did enjoy. I will still check out more by this author though.
