I had a really hard time with the characterization of this book. The main character drinks, though she keeps it a secret from her parents, and she sleeps around, but the angel who guards her sister thinks she has a better heart than average, and falls in love with her. It just seems that some of the moral underpinnings of the tale are hard to swallow. The idea isn't bad, but the character isn't quite shown as going from foolish to wise; rather the foolishness is brushed under the carpet as negligible, so the story rang false to me throughout. Probably this would have been a better book with a few more drafts done on this tangent.

Not quite up to the standards of his later novels, but still a moving and evocative story of a family living in smelly, chaotic, fascinating Mumbai during the 1970s. Highly recommended, as are all of Mistry's books.
Absolutley loved it. Richard Wentworth is a wealthy "playboy" by day. By night he turns into the mysterious "Spider, Master of Men". Similar to the Shadow and even more ruthless. These Pulp adventure heroes didn't mind taking the law into their own hands and killing the Villains (unlike Doc Savage who became more of a progenitor for the Super heroes). It's obvious here that the Spider (as well as the Shadow) influenced the creation of Batman. Highly recommended to all pulp adventure readers.
Hot town, summer in the city.
Though Frank Herbert is most well known for writing the Dunes series, one of my ultimate favorite books is by him, and is this book. Very well written and it captures the heartbreaking struggle of the Native Americans.

** spoiler alert ** The movie ruined the book for me. If you are going to read this, I say plan on not watching the movie. It's an interesting story of mental illness. I am amazed that it has such a cult following...I mean, individuals all over the world are changing their names, are starting fight clubs, are creating a real project mayhem.

(Get it on amazon- free for limited time!) Not knowing quite what to expect from this new author, I was pleasantly surprised. The beginning of the book opens with what seems to be a nightmare, but we soon discover that the main character, Paivi, can sometimes see visions of the future from her dreams. Paivi is a very in depth character and reading this book, you really come to feel what she is feeling, as her thoughts and reactions are described very well and she is easy to connect to. She cares so much about those around her that she sometimes even cares more about them than she does about herself. This can be a good or bad thing, but it becomes dangerous when her world turns upside down and she learns that there are others like her, who have special abilities. But they must keep it a secret. But the secret gets revealed. And now her very life is in danger. The Red Scare and The Salem Witch Trials are combined together and thrown into modern times with fears of “terrorists”, and it soon becomes like Nazi Germany. It becomes a normal thing for classmates and even friends to turn against the people who were declared “enemies of the state.” It is very scary how realistic this is and how it happens-it shows it can very well happen now. Even the principal of the school is no longer able to protect his students, or else he will also be declared an enemy of the state. Everyone lives in fear and fear breeds hate. Anyone who tries to protect them, defend them or stand up for them in any way is violently pushed back and warned about putting their own necks on the line. Other students so easily turn against her. She tries to blend in and follow the rules, not wanting to be arrested or put anyone else in danger for her. When her parents are in danger of being arrested, the world for her and the other “enemies of the state” becomes completely unrecognizable. And when Paivi and her younger brother have to fight to survive on their own, the situation looks even worse. With few people left to trust and not wanting to put anyone in danger, what else can you do to survive in a world that has turned against you? Could this really happen? This book will open your eyes to the horror of how fast this can happen and how people could very well react and be led to do anything for fear of the “terrorist” or the “enemy” and for fear of the consequences of standing up for what is right. Definitely a great read, a thrilling adventure, very thought provoking and while it has some emotional road bumps, it is very much worth it and I would recommend you add it to your to-be-read-next pile. I had read so many sparkling reviews of this book that I figured I had to try it. The writing wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either. I guess the thought that really captures my feelings on this book is that I kept wondering why I should care about these characters and what happens to them?

I haven't read this book yet, but... I really don't like the Harry Potter series. The stories are O.K. The plots are O.K. But I think that people say that it is much better then it is. I think that the Harry Potter series is really over-rated and not as good as people say that it is.
I cannot say enough about this stunning work of fiction(?)! The zombie genre has always been a favorite of mine. I was skeptical that what has been so captivating on the big screen could not be so in book form. Wrong-O!! Brooks' has elevated the zombie genre to new heights. From the origins of the outbreak in rural China and the socio-political reasons for it's spread to uncontainable proportions, this reads like a real life account of a survivor. Late nights spent reading had me listening for shambling in the darkness outside, literally! The language and feeling presented nearly convinced me that pockets of zombies were roaming about the countryside and I found myself looking over my shoulder in the dark. Fan-freakin-tastic!!!
