Needed a better editor. Some awkward jumps, but very interesting.

Anne Washburn's "Ladies" and Neal Bell's "Shadow of Himself" are both brilliant. The other four plays, documentary theater works by The Civilians theater collective, didn't do as much for me. So, I'm giving the book as a whole a four-star rating though those two plays really belong in the five-star range.

A good overview of why beauty is perceived the way it is. A fun and interesting read.

a thought provoking look into excessive eating that manages to not be preachy or a "diet" book - it's about re-balancing your attitude to food.

This book wasn't as exciting as I thought it would be but it did have a lot of twists. I liked that about the book. Overall I would've liked to see something more exciting, but after I got further into the book it became a little more attracting.

I love these Vince Flynn novels with Mitch Rapp. The storyline is so alined with the news of today with terroist attacks and ridiculous politicians. My only problem was with his girlfriend who acts like the dumb blonde in a horror flick by negating the possible danger to herself and goes out into the night alone and gets herself picked up by the bad guys. I am excited to read more of his novels in the very near future.

This was one of those incredibly happy coincidences you could never explain. I was working in Asheville, NC and every year for Christmas I bought a book for the young daughter of a friend of mine. I started with "The Polar Express" and who knew how that would mushroom? This was the year I ordered this one from a catalog because I liked the title. Imagine my surprise and delight when I peeked inside on its arrival to discover it was set in western North Carolina. I had been through many of the places mentioned and this made the book even more special to all of us. There were more books over the years and now I'm back home in Ohio and Emmaleigh is married and grown. For years, I know they read all the books I gave her for Christmas. I hope they're still cherished the way I cherish Emmaleigh and her family. I need to get a copy of this for Christmas 2011 for my niece and tell her the story. Books are so wonderful, aren't they?

From the first page up 'til the last, I was completely engrossed and enlightened. I connected with the Codi character extremely. She was an overeducated achiever coming back to the town that scorned her. As the book progresses Barbara Kingsolver reveals the human flaws of the whole town. She also teaches you to live how you feel happy living and to ignore the world and their comments. This book is one that keep me guessing and left me with a realistic ending. Also, I recommend this to friends.

70 pages in: A Jewish immigrant flees Ukraine, circa 1924, after her family and friends are brutally killed in a Russian pogrom. In New York's Lower East Side, she works in the garment industry and finds security, if not love, in the arms and apartments of a Yiddish Theatre star who prefers men, and, later, in the arms of his father. Not a terrible read; just not enough going on, plot- or style-wise, to earn any more of my precious pleasure-reading time. Plus, I just finished Everything is Illuminated, and I've had about as much heartbreaking-acts-of-Jewish-genocide literature as I can stomach just now.
