In my opinion, The second book to the Percy Jackson series wasn't as good as the first one, but in all, it was still good. The reason I'm saying this is because I just didn't really get the whole story. I think I forgot what it was about already. I may have to put this in my to-re-read book shelf. The reason it's in my 5-star book shelf is because of the series. I liked the series and in my opinion, the Percy Jackson series is a 5-star series, but individually, they are still 5 stars, except for some of the books.....

shamefully, I bought this in the airport. but worth it! sure, the story-in-a-story shuffling through time was gimmicky, but this was a gimmick that worked. it was elegantly plotted, which is worth a lot of points in emily-world, and david mitchell has a lot of success shifting his tone from one section to another.
this was my favourite of all seven books

In general I thought this book was good. However, I was disappointed in the ending. It felt like it was just thrown onto the end of the story, almost like an attempt to just finish it up and get the story published. The details that pushed along the rest of the story weren't there. If the last 4 chapters had been better... instead I feel let down.
Honestly, you should read this. It features several attempts on a little girl's life by a low-class fairy, which is almost understandable, considering that said little girl makes her six-year old brother sleep in a cradle suspended from the ceiling, and frequently demands to be called Mother. Other highlights include flogging, child abandonment, scalping, and an extensive sequence in which the children's father moves into the dog kennel in a fit of shame. All this mayhem is rendered in delightful, sparkling prose and illustrated with charming little etchings. It's very easy to why it's become a timeless children's classic.
I thought it was different than the other books I have read. It is ok, but I Louis L'Amour and I think he is better author. this book was interesting because I have never realy read a book that was about having school in the past, and about bomb drills.

** spoiler alert ** This last installment of the Darkest Powers Trilogy is freaking fantastic! I DEVOUERD this book. It's the only one in the series where I was completely creeped out, I wanted to be creeped out in the previous two books, but somehow it never happened. Chloe! Finally, she lived up to being wholly worthy as a lead character! I think Chloe's vulnerability is perfectly balanced with her moxie in The Reckoning. I was really found myself totally immersed in her as a character for the first time. Derek. I didn't think it was possible for me to fall any more in love with Derek Souza than I already had, but somehow I did. I think he carries this book, this series. I can't help feeling that Kelley Armstrong would have gotten a lot more out of the story line if she'd told it from Derek's perspective, but then on the other hand, I like that we see him from Chloe's perspective, that we learn things about him as she does. Simon redeemed himself slightly in this book, though I still found him boring. It still feels as though he's there merely to provide the third point in the love triangle, and to set up and justify Derek's protective instincts - which I found superfluous as he's a werewolf, I think it's pretty standard in wolfy fiction that protectiveness is a major part of the werewolf personality. Any and all scenes between Chloe and Derek have been reread countless times. I just love them together. I also think that the progression of their relationship is very age-appropriate and feels very natural. I love that Chloe isn't one of those girls that will take crap from a guy merely because he pays attention to her. The scene between Simon and Chloe after their date was heartbreaking - and then Derek shows up! I wanted to smack him, and I wanted to reach through the pages and kiss him! He was perfect in this scene and so was Chloe. I keep getting a Mr. Dary/Elizabeth Bennett vibe from these two, I think this is owed largely to the fact that Derek is so perfectly awkward and fumbling in their relationship. This book infuriated me, annoyed me, made me laugh, made me sigh, and go gooey inside. As you can see I've mainly focused on the romance side of this series and I have to admit this is because it's basically the really only intriguing part about the series. I wasn't particularly interested in the supernatural theme - except in relation to Derek's being a werewolf, which I found odd as I LOVE supernatural/fantasy books.

I really enjoyed this book. It was one of the first books we read for the CHA book club. I love stories about the afterlife. This one was only partly about the afterlife, but fortunately, the rest of the book was interesting too.

I picked up this book because it had a cute cover. The book itself was pretty good, but it had very many cliche ideas and patterns. The writing style was good. This book is definitely not a very realistic book and at points it even bordered on being sexist toward males. That is just my opinion though and I'm a girl haha. Actually, in the second book, I think that it corrected itself. It drew me in enough for me to have read the second book. Anyway, if you want a light, fun read I would recommend it.

My Sparkling Misfortune is a story spinning around the self-proclaimed villain, Lord Arkus of Blackriver Castle. After being backstabbed by the not-so-honorable wannabe hero, Prince Kellemar, Lord Arkus is now putting his villainous mind to work to think about a deserving revenge for Prince Kellemar. But the first and the most crucial step of the plan goes disastrously wrong as he captures a Sparkling (a good spirit) instead of a Gormack (an evil spirit). For Arkus, the only good in having a sparkling as his servant for five years is that now he is seemingly safe from the monster who has been trying to kill him for many years. But as he soon finds out it is a bit difficult to be evil with a sparkling around who is bent in making him good. When I first heard the title, My Sparkling Misfortune I had no idea what to make of it. But the book won me over just after its first page. The first page alone showed the villainous intents of Lord Arkus. According to the set belief, villains are to hated and detested but as hard as I tried I couldn’t come even near to hating Lord Arkus. He may proclaim to anyone and everyone that he is a villain from heart and soul but as we read on we realize that he may take pride in being in being a villain but he has nothing evil in him. Arkus’s sarcastic and humorous narrative will send the readers into peals of laughter. Jarvis, the sparkling, too adds to the entertainment factor with his sense of humour. It seems that Jarvis’s sole occupation is to bring out the good in his master, Lord Arkus by preventing him from spending his days in ‘scheming, plotting, attacking, invading, killing, plundering, kidnapping, collecting ransom and having other types of fun’. So, what does it matter if Jarvis gets a little fun out of it by sending Arkus into fits of anger? Many of the previous books I have read have humour which seemed forced, as if the author was trying to make the readers laugh but was failing miserably. But while reading My Sparkling Misfortune, I never got such a feeling. The humour came naturally. The narrative is entertaining which would keep the readers hooked to the book. Arkus’s not-so-villainous character is both lovable and adorable. By the end of the book it seemed that I had unconsciously decided to support him even if he did something evil. The situation that Lord Arkus finds himself in is hilarious. Instead of catching an evil gormack to aid him in his evil plans he catches a sparkling named ‘Tulip’ (understandably Arkus changes his name to Jarvis, after all which villain would like to have a servant named Tulip), who wants to turn him into a noble and honorable person. The greatest irony in the story was when Arkus unknowingly saves the princess he had planned to kidnap and is hailed as the heroic ‘Lakeland Knight’. Another thing that made the book more interesting to read are the beautiful illustrations at the end of each chapter. The illustrations not only made the characters more alive, they made it easier to visualise the characters. My Sparkling Misfortune with all its humor also sends out a message about how easily we judge a person’s character without even knowing them properly. We generally distribute people into the good and the bad, forgetting that every person has their grey shades. Even the so-called good people sometimes act quite opposite to the popular conception of their characters. My Sparkling Misfortune is funny and even gives out a good message. It definitely deserves a place in the must read lists of all fantasy enthusiasts. Overall: Entertaining, hilarious and now, one of my favorites Recommended? Yes, to all middle graders and also, to all fantasy lovers.
