Joshilyn Jackson is a pro at characterization! Her plot development also left me hanging until the last page, to uncover the reasons behind a poor young girl's attempt to belong. Heartily recommend this one to anyone who loves Southern lit!

Young Ross McCrae has always been torn between the kindly laird who brought him up and his boisterous father, the piper of the clan. Barely old enough to fight, he tries to make them both proud by joining the Highlander forces, defending Scotland against Cromwell but after a devastating battle, coming out on the losing side. Suddenly, the laird is dead back at home, his father falls on the battlefield, the child who tries to help him killed by the English, and Ross takes his father's bagpipes as he is captured by the English. The march to an English prison is brutal, as is harsh imprisonment, but there is worse in store for the Scots when 150 of them learn they are being shipped to America to be indentured servants! Most of the proud Scots would prefer death to lifelong exile, and Ross himself falls into despair once he is on a ship going across the Atlantic. Unexpectedly, Ross is befriended by an Englishman on the ship, a Cavalier escaping from Cromwell with his lovely daughter Joanna Sprague. It is Mr. Sprague who helps give Ross the will to live, as they both head for the unknown (which, in fact, is the Saugus Iron Works in Massachusetts, as is described in the sequel, The Iron Peacock, which I hope is not quite as sad as this book).

As is always the case with Elin Hilderbrand's books, I absolutely loved this book. It was a fast, beachy read (which is not at all an insult), and I loved the characters and the writing. I just wish I didn't read it so fast so that I would have been able to enjoy it longer!

ball dont lie was a phenominal book a which sticky a teenager was trying to acheive his goal of becoming a basketball player. sticky had many things up against him such as the streets and racial predjudice. with stickys determination h is able to accomplish his dreams but it took alot of hardwork such as staying in the gym to practice on the weekends. at the same time sticky was deeply involved in the game of the streets being a freshman on a higher varsity team playing and saving a win stickys drama with the streets may have had an effect on his game but i can say it made a huge impact on his game. so if you are interested in basketball but struggles along the way to make yoube the best that you can be ball don lie is definitely the best book for you(my rating is 10/10).

As usual, Erik Larson does a great job integrating drama and intrigue into history through the use of old letters and documents. This book provides a rich view of life in Germany (especially for expatriots) during the 1930s but it meanders a bit and goes on longer than necessary. For those who don't have a strong knowledge of historical events during that period, it is also never quite clear where the novel is headed until it ends.

This book turn out to be nothing like what I expected. At first I was a little put off by the language and some of the graphic imagery, but the book turned out to be wonderfully planned out and some of the best character development that I have ever read.

Bleh. One of the interdisciplinary books that are so popular today. This one was full of fancy scientific terms and latin vocabulary. It read like a poem that I read for rhythm and enjoyment, rather than a novel I can remember anything substantive out of. I've only read the first two pages of "Crying: A Natural and Cultural History of Tears" and it's already a bigger hit than "Smile."
