I'm not even sure where I'd begin complimenting this book. If nothing else, it will really, really make you want to go see the Panama Canal. It will also make you happy you don't live with the threat of malaria or yellow fever. Also, the party opening the Suez Canal sounds like the kind of thing I wish I could go back in time and experience.

This book is so funny and yet so uncomfortable at the same time! Sedaris has a totally weird/awkward sense of humor, but it's a quick read and definitely enjoyable.

What a weird little book with a meandering storyline! It's alright, I guess, but just sort of strange.

I last read this book in high school, and I remembered precious little of the Really Important Bits. I'm really glad I went back and re-read it, since it hit me on different levels now. Sometimes I think the classics are wasted on the young when we force them to take in works they don't have the perspective to appreciate yet. But perhaps it's better to have read books like this one young, and then revisit them in adulthood, so we can look back at where we were and how the different messages in a great novel speak to us in different ways. It hits me in a different place in my heart now: “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
Paula Morris has done it again. I really liked this book. There were so many fun things about it: humorous narration, interesting characters, fun family dynamics, and a beautiful old English mystery/ghost story. Of course, I'm likely to just love anything set in England, so maybe I'm biased. It took a little time to pick up pace in the plot, quite slow moving and a bit difficult to get into. But then it whizzed. I finished the last few chapters in one edge-of-my-seat late night sitting. Couldn't put it down. And I smiled at the end. One of those, "that was really quite nice" smiles that you sometimes get at the end of books. Very good!

Roosevelt is probably the most interesting man who ever lived. I am fascinated by his life, and Morris's trilogy is a towering study of one the truly great americans. A large book it is worth the time to explore the life of this extraordinary life.
