The Kings in Winter reminded me of why I've never been a huge fan of the prolific Cecelia Holland's historical fiction, whose work I'd tried a long time ago. I'm sure the setting and research were impeccable and there was definitely a sense that this was the way people really lived in eleventh century Ireland, but I just didn't like anyone in the story enough to care about what happened to them. I did like Aud, the wife of the main character Murtagh, and the scenes of domesticity that I found to be quite charming, but alas, the book was much more about Murtagh and his relationships to the kings of the title (Brian Boru, and the two rival kings of Munster and Leinster.) The scenes set amidst the Vikings who had come to fight against Brian were interesting, but they came at a point that was well over the halfway mark of the book, and I had trouble figuring out who was who and moreover, didn't particularly care. I'm still interested in reading more by Cecelia Holland, but I'm afraid my earlier judgment may still stand.

An excellent reference for kitchen knives. Which reminds me, I really should get my knife sharpened.
Of course, everyone loves the happy ending.
Great!
At times well-written. Other times it just read as vengeful. And I found myself wondering the same thing I wondered about the anorexic's Bible, Wasted : how much more time will this author need to take real responsibility for her addiction and the damage it has caused? How different might this memoir be if written by a 35-year-old, instead of last year's college graduate who's only a few months past the events she narrates? For those forthcoming "memoir of a memoir" volumes, I propose the following titles : Pulverized. Shattered. Smithereened. Whipped. Chopped. Crushed ... oh, wait, those are the settings on my blender.

** spoiler alert ** I've read most of Kristin Hannah's books and usually enjoy them, but this book blew me away. Anya's suffering in Leningrad during the war and the life she led for nearly 60 years afterward were unbelievable. A perfect illustration of the depth of a mother's love and what she would do to try to save her children. They should sell this book with a box of tissues!
This was a concise review of market bubbles and how we ended up in this financial mess.

I'm giving Dan Brown's books (everything I read after Davinci Code and Angels and Demons) 3 stars until I see some variation.

Very tight, not a spare word in this small book. But it packs a punch that you were not expecting...
I picked this up the library because The Nanny Diaries was checked out. I decided I'd read it because of the novelty of how maybe I could relate to a young 20-something girl searching for her place in the "work" world of NYC and with life in general; but as her work exploits later in the book stretched far outside my own experiences, it became less about direct comparisons to myself and instead I took it for what it was...a reassuring final moral and some good chuckles.
