I stumbled upon this novel in advisory and was slightly discouraged when I saw how long it was. But after reading the blurb and a look at the cover, I thought it would be an easy read. As I flipped through the novel, I saw that it was written in journal entries which I thought was very interesting. And from the cover, I got the vibe it was a comedic story, which I don’t usually read. I thought I could give it a try and I really liked it. This novel tells the story of a young boy by the name of John Milton who describes his first year at a boarding school in South Africa, during the apartheid. van de Ruit combines a story of a typical school, a young boy who hasn’t gone through puberty (therefore given the nickname Spud) and social issues in Africa to share a universal story of struggle. His decision to tell the story through journal entries allows for the reader to create a close-knit relationship with John Milton while still understanding everything else that is going on. In reading the story I realized that John’s struggles to fit in and the struggles individuals faced during the apartheid all relate to a bigger picture which is that of struggle. Everyone undergoes some kind of struggle in their life ranging in severity. That was something I could relate to as well as John’s character. John is a witty, outgoing kid who is trying to become cooler by being on good terms with The Crazy Eights (boys in his dorm). I feel as though there have been times where I’ve tried to fit in (middle school) but as I mature, I have learned how to accept my individuality. Although it was a long read, I don’t regret it one bit. This is a truly intriguing novel and anyone who likes an interesting story which intertwines information about the apartheid in Africa, would enjoy it.

it's a self help book, and while i dont think its for everyone there are a lot of very valid points, much of which you already know but choose to ignore when you need to remember them. personally, i found it useful, because it forced to me admit things to myself that i didn't want to admit (no tami not what you're thinking)but it is very new ageish so when reading this book if you so choose to keep that in mind. i'm not really into new age but i think if you can get past that language you can find the root of the conversation she is trying to have with you. its all about being more open with yourself and allowing the elements of life effect you and embracing it and realizing how you will grow from it.

epic and hysterically funny, tender and profound, not really possible but it ought to be, dammit.

Great book, couldn´t put down.
I got this book because I'm a closet romantic... And I like that period of time.
This was a life changing book for me. An English teacher loaned this to me when I was 11 and it converted me into life long reader. It was a book as up until then I'd never imagined, a pleasure to read instead of a chore. Of course, as a grown-up, 30 years later, rereading it again, it's not quite as good as I remember, but I still enjoyed it.
For about 90% of this book, I really didn't like Olive. A retired schoolteacher, Olive is cold, distant, critical, and sometimes downright cruel. What's strange is that Olive seems to be at her best when her neighbors are in need. Seemingly without knowing it, Olive seems to know just what to say and do when someone is in crisis. The novel is a series of short stories, each one focused on a character from a small town in Maine who has somehow encountered Olive in their life. While the book tended to drag a bit at the beginning and its definitely not an uplifting read, the author is a master at creating flawed, realistic characters that show the best and worst of human nature.
