The Beach Street knitters remind me so of my friends from England and Ireland! I fancy a few "cuppa" and a few "sod off" from time to time. Basically, the book is a good summer read. Gil McNeil's characters really come to life. Jo McKenzie is a likable heroine and most of the folks in the book are great! I found myself laughing aloud in parts of the book. I would have given the book a better rating, but some of the major characters lack some development. I hope Ms. McNeil continues with Jo McKenzie and is willing to further flesh out her supporting cast. Because of the knitting background, you may find yourself comparing McNeil to Debbie Macomber. You can tell that Macomber has been at the "knitting novel" for more years. However, I look forward to another visit with Jo McKenzie and her wonderful, funny world in Kent, England.

One of the best books I've ever read...and I read a lot. Great character development and a very uplifting and empowering novel
I heard of this book and was dying to read it. Thank you for the reminder.
I read this after my first session at CTY in 1999, and the combination of experiences is largely what set me on the path to becoming an astronomy major at Cornell. I already liked astronomy, but CTY cemented it. Contact has a lot to do with why I came to Cornell specifically. Sagan was here, we operate Arecibo from here... I wanted to be Ellie Arroway when I grew up. I still do. It's been a while since I read it, but aside from the enormous life-changing effect it had on me, I remember it being a superb piece of science fiction. Science fiction written by actual scientists is always fun because of the depth of the science; Sagan really thought everything through. Contact also has quite good characterization, which is something science fiction written by actual scientists sometimes lacks. This is definitely one of my favorites.
I want to read this again

Sweet little book about a little burro that lived in the Grand Canyon. Still as fun as when I first read it ages ago, and a nice little trip down memory lane!

Oof. I read The Radiant Way a long time ago and liked it, but this was awful. Drabble thinly disguises herself as a *different* aging British academic (why, why bother with the disguise?!?) and then channels (not very successfully) an eighteenth-century Korean princess. I say "not very successfully" because really most of it is Drabble imposing her late twentieth-century values and preoccupations on this hapless historical figure. Time travel gone really bad. Stay away, stay away.

Can I make it a 3+? Enjoyed this book. As a survivor in a shooting at college, Riley Palmetta is ideal as the person to help set up and run a training course for dealing with and prevention of random acts of terror. However, years later, she still struggles with her own feelings of helplessness and fear. She accepts the job and works with an elite group of Navy SEALS. Romance, action, what do you do kind of book.
