** spoiler alert ** Another blanket review, this one for all "Arrows" books. The rating is from my 12-year-old self, and she emphatically recommends them to all 12-year-old girls who lean toward fantasy. Being a horse-crazy preteen, I was, of course, ALL about these first Valdemar books. Insanely so. They're far more accessible than the Pern books, the language isn't as stilted or formal, the plotlines aren't utterly simplistic, but neither are they so convoluted as to be impenetrable to a 12-year-old. The characters were closer to my age, and everything they went through was much more indentifiable to me at the time. I loved them wildly, and being already somewhat twisted, I was even crazy over the whole tragic-death-and-torture angle. I don't think they hold up well over time, though. The prose is very simplistic, and as others have said, this trilogy does sort of scream "New Author" in flashing neon. I think the world is built well, and only gets better in subsequent series; there are some very nice sociological touches, and I can (usually) even overlook the Mary Sue-ness of all Heralds, simply because they're all paladins who are Heralds because of their Mary Sue/Gary Stu qualities. Lackey isn't afraid to torture the hell out of her characters, which is a selling point for me, but the books are not very challenging in prose or plot. I have recently cleared all the Lackey off my shelves except for this trilogy, and I kept these only out of nostalgia.

Well, at first it was really hard to get in to. There are so many characters and it just seemed really slow in the beginning 300 pages.... Plus I was completely annoyed at first because I hated ALL of his proper nouns. I felt like he was just taking every word we already use, then barely changing it and I just thought he shouldn't change it at all if he can't come up with something more creative. After getting over that, and the slow beginning, (I put the book down for about a month before I decided to give it one last shot.) Then from there, I couldn't put the fricken thing down. The story line is very very amazing. Very Lord of the Rings like when it comes to all the evil creatures and such. I found myself chuckling at most metaphors and similes, I really enjoyed those! On to book 2...

I haven't read any of the other books in this series, and after reading this one I definitely won't! I found the characters to be so flat and silly, with no complexity at all, that they were more like "charactures." I am 50 something and I would hope that those of us in this age group have more depth and brains than the author has given these women. I wouldn't be able to stand a group of women like this!

My Thoughts: I love the Body Finder series so I knew once Derting wrote another book, I would be first in line to read it! I'll read anything she writes! We are introduced to Charlie who can hear different languages. This is not normal where she lives and you're only supposed to talk/hear in your own language. There are many different kinds of people, and each language only goes with those people. It kind of reminds me if people believed only mexicans were allowed to speak spanish or caucasians were only allowed to speak english. She has a little sister named Angelina who is 4 years old. She has her own gifts. We are also introduced to her best friends and the two guys she meets along the way. Max and Xander. Oh Max, you were so mysterious and I loved finding out all your secrets. Xander, I also liked you. Max worked for the military and has his own secrets and Xander works for the resistance, trying to change the world. These two awesome boys kept showing up all over the place, everywhere Charlie seemed to be. There is also a queen who sets out to make everyone obey her every command. I loved how Charlie could understand all the languages. I loved watching her hear what other people said and trying to act all secretive like she couldn't understand. I also liked all the side characters along the way. I really liked the things we found out and the ending of course. I was satisfied with it! I loved how Charlie was so protective of her sister and her parents. She was determined not to let anyone or anything hurt them. Same with her friends. She was a great person to have on your side. I was so surprised about who Charlie was. I knew something was up, but I never suspected that about her and Max! She was a little special, huh? The Pledge was a pretty good read. About halfway through, I almost gave up. It just seemed like nothing was happening and it just wasn't holding my attention but that soon stopped and I felt myself sucked in and read the whole book in just a few hours. Overall: I really enjoyed this one once I got into it. I liked the plot, the funny and snarky comments, the friendship, the love she felt for her family. The boys were a plus too! At least give this one a try, even if you end up not liking it, or enjoying it like me! Cover: Like it but it seems too ordinary for this novel. What I'd Give It: 4/5 Cupcakes ________ Taken From Princess Bookie www.princessbookie.com

Speaking as someone who has a great many funky dreams, this was a great read. The writing style was a bit hard to get used to though, but after a while the Fragment Writing, as I've started to call it, worked for the book. It's quick, intense, but not *really* that much of a plot, in all honesty, other than the fact that this girl Janie (who is awesome by the way) can go into other people's dreams and how it affects her life (much more than you might think). I'd read it again.

As the title states, Beauty is a retelling of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. It's not really like the disney movie (which I love), but it's not bad. Beauty is the youngest of three. Her two older sisters are babes, and she is ironically quite plain. No matter though, as obviously she gets some animal loving. Anyways, she has to go off to this castle and live with the Beast. They fall in love, no beastiality happens, since this is a YA/kids book, and children just don't go for that stuff. I bet you could probably guess the whole plot from the first page and not be too far off the mark. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys fairy tales and brain candy between heavy tomes.

"Others said, and still say, they could never have done what she eventually did. Theirs became quite a story, a story still told." I was intrigued from the beginning. The Maytrees is a story of a couple, Toby and Lou; a story of love and living simply; a story of heartache and questioning life; and a story of family and redemption. The words are fresh and Dillard's descriptions are beautiful.

我已经读过七本书了。 安妮·迪拉德(Annie Dillard)是我最喜欢的作家之一。 她的非小说作品是关于自然的,而更多地是关于人类的经历。 h,不是所有文学作品吗? 很有哲理。
