This is not the best literary biography I've ever read, though it's certainly better than a Peter Ackroyd one. Perhaps this might have something to do with the fact that Forster's life wasn't exactly thrilling. I would recommend the first volume of the biography to anyone interested in Forster during the years which he was writing novels.

Surprisingly compelling. Some of the premises might not stand up to close inspection, but well written, with an interesting storyline and believable characters. I started it on a Friday night and finished it the next morning. And it's set in Columbus, so that's fun.

I have read and re-read this book. I can't quite pin down its appeal as it's not the kind of book I'd normally read, but I suppose that Forster's prose and characterization make it it the most charming book that I've ever read.

I just need to keep reminding myself that not everything is as wonderful as Like Water For Chocolate. But this book does have that same sort of magical realism that Chocolate had, and it did have many beautiful passages. I especially loved the beginning of Chapter 4, where we learn that "Love is a verb." This is a tragic story of love and loss that will probably please most. It's not perfect, and it's not brilliant, and it's not Chocolate, but it's easily better than average.

About to be a movie. 20 bucks says the book is better. Concerns immigrant experience, living simultaneously in different cultures/worlds. Written in present tense, which makes it feel very immediate. Yeah, I cried at the end.

I have read this book three times and am still reading it and learning from it with each new read. It speaks profoundly to the way we relate (or do not relate) as human beings.

I was going into an interview with the author, so I figured I would read his book first. It actually ended up being a really interesting look at the history of hollywood through the eyes of a fictional hollywood power family. Every section is a year during a different decade. It starts with the father and how he was working in film right when TV was coming out. Then it skips ahead to his son and the son's family in Hollywood up to the present day. They do everything - even make a fictional movie about Lincoln with Michael Douglas as the star. All around them are real hollywood legends that you personally get to know. You also get to put in context the advancement of technology and how it has affected the film industry over time and what should have been learned from it. Though it can start slow - hang in there because it gets really good.

Punk-rock poetry. An incredible exploration of the boundaries (or, as in the case of Patti and Robert, lack thereof) between life and art and what it's like to live with an all-consuming passion for art. This would be a great book to add to an ENG 232 syllabus, for all you MSU grads who might be teaching creative non-fiction in the near future!
