The tail of two boxer, one washed up, the other just beginning in Stockton, Calif. An amazing, tragic story about two lives that are so similar, yet barely touch. Worth reading again, the language is violent and I wanted to give the main characters a quarter.

I love this book! It's absolutely amazing and hilarious! Though it had a lot of jokes, it had scenes of seriousness too. Tyson is funny. He has a certain appeal due to his childlike innocence. Plus, his name is like an ad for chicken nuggets. I really dislike Luke now. I kind of think that he is nuts, but his dad is pretty cool. I want to say "legit" or "boss," but that's not me and I have absolutely no clue about what they mean. Haha, anyways, back to the book. Hermes is a pretty good mailman, because that is kind of what he is. Plus, the snakes on his stylus are pretty funny. Compared to the first and third books, I believe it could use a little more action and a little more thrill. It was basically a joke book. One funny part was when Tyson was amazed by everything he saw. He's all "Whasdat?! Whasdat?!" and it's amusing when he is so intrigued by the toilets. Then, he called Chyron a pony and he was all like "My young cyclops. I am a centaur." He acted so offended! I like the series.

These were the perfect books to read after finishing my Note. I would reccomend it to any law student starved of imagination by the dessicating drivel of case after case. The Golden Compass is surely the best of the three, if only because it introduces us to a perfectly imagined world. A world recognizably ours, but filled with witches and intelligent armored polar bears. Yes, I love the intelligent armored polar bears. But the entire trilogy is moving. While the controversy over Pullman's "anti-religion" themes is interesting, the main themes of the book--that childhood innocence is nice, but adult pain (and sexuality) are necessary--resonate even more strongly. Also, the movies are coming out soon. Jump on the bandwagon.
I'm a huge fan of paranormal romance books, although I admit that I am somewhat new to the genre. I've read several of the most popular series of books in this genre (Immortals After Dark and Black Dagger Brotherhood, etc.) so I really didn't expect to fall in love with another series like I did those. WRONG! While these books are more about action than sex - it totally works for these characters and this series. Cat and Bones have such a delicious love/hate relationship at first. (Well, all the hate being on Cat's side.) It was fun to watch it bloom into something more. If anyone reading this remembers the TV show Moonlighting, you'll appreciate this book. Cat and Bones have this great back and forth banter that is always laced with a little bit of sex. While they might be arguing - you know they're both thinking about what it's like to make out with the other one. That element alone makes this worth reading. All that aside - the concept is great. Cat - the half human/half vampire who hunts and kills vamps. Bones - the 240 year old vampire who hunts the bad vamps for money. I can't wait to sink my teeth into the rest of the series. (And yes - that is such a bad pun to use when describing a vampire book. But, I.DO.NOT.CARE.) :)

I'm not a big fan of this genre and although the book was very popular, easy to read and made into a big film, I wouldn't really recommend it to friends.

The Ideal Man is the first novel I've read by Julie Garwood, but if more of her novels are like this one was then I'll be reading many more. This novel wasn’t just good, it kept me up until 3am reading. I couldn’t put it down. Ellie is a wonderful heroine. She’s smart, extremely attractive and one of the nicest people you’d ever read along with. She’s also the best surgeon on staff at the St. Vincent Hospital. Ellie meets Max during a shooting with a modern day Bonnie and Clyde. From the first time she meets him, she knows he’s not her type, but she wants him to be. Max is a agent with the FBI and he’s been trying to get the Landry couple for a while, they almost got him at the park, but they underestimated them. He didn’t expect to meet the beautiful Dr. Sullivan and he certainly doesn’t have the time for a relationship that she deserves, but he can’t seem to stop thinking about her. As a witness Ellie is in danger of being put to ‘silence’ by the Landrys and if that isn’t bad enough Max finds out about her horrible past with a evil man. He wants to strongly protect her and he’ll do anything to see her safe. Did I mention Max is extremely handsome? Well, he is. He’s loyal, smart and downright dreamy. He was the hero of the novel and is now my hero! I highly recommend this novel to mystery, suspense and romance novels. You’ll be kept on your toes and have many twists to keep you begging for more. I’m going to be picking up more of Julie Garwood for certain.

One of the marks of a great book, in my opinion, is if the story compels one to read it more than once. Ethan Frome is such a book. Its main character is a flawed, but likable man whose lot in life is to take care of his ailing wife, a woman for which he has lost all love, if he ever had any. He develops feelings for a younger woman and risks everything to follow her. Edith Wharton is a master with irony and the twist that this book offers rivals the twists of a M. Night Shaymalan film. Worth reading twice.

Jodi Meadows' "Incarnate" is one of those books that can suck you into its vortex of storytelling from the very beginning, because it has all the elements of a supernatural story that has its feet in the right place. For one, the concept of reincarnated souls and discussing a young woman who's just discovering this world around her and not fitting into the norm seems fascinating. Not to mention there are dragons, sylph, and a resonant love story promised. But as I reached the end of the work, I realized that it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. It's a decent story that I think lost quite a bit of its momentum towards the end because it faltered on the worldbuilding and left many threads dangling in an incomplete way. I know this is the start of a series, but I believe there were too many unanswered questions left in the aftermath. Ana is considered a New Soul, a soul without the ability to reincarnate. Unlike the rest of the souls living in Heart, she sticks out like a sore thumb, brought into existence for the first time while another Incarnate mysteriously disappeared with no trace. Ana's even shunned by the abusive, manipulative mother who raised her, Li. She leaves town and gets herself into a bind by a river, only to be saved by Sam. Sam take her in under his wing, returns her to Heart, the city where she was born, but not everyone is welcome to Ana's presence there. As Sam's relationship with her grows along with her curiosity to figure out where she came from, Ana realizes that she may be in over her head as forces work against her to make sure she doesn't disrupt the norm they've worked to create for so long. Some of the elements I liked in this work were Ana's account of her lack of belonging - I could appreciate that, especially considering this is something I think will resonate with the age group its intended for. Did I think it needed to be reemphasized as many times as it was? Probably not, but the distance Ana feels is realistic and packs a punch in spurts. She also accounts the abuse she suffered under her mother's wing, Li, and that also made me feel for Ana as the story went on. Sam is also a decent male lead - caring, talented, determined, and privy to understanding Ana despite her differences. I actually didn't have a problem with the way the story wove Sam as being a reincarnate with a larger history than Ana, and even exploring that he was a woman in a previous life. It was interesting that Meadows went in that direction with many of the characters shifting genders and ages and how that impacted the realm around Heart, though I think I would've appreciated it more with a bit of expansion and further depth to make it hit home much more than what it did. I'll admit I found it a bit creepy that Sam would give Ana his clothes from that previous life among a few details that made it seem he was catering/taking her under his wing a bit too quickly. I wouldn't say there was an "insta-love" connection in this story right off the bat, but the romance takes center stage for a good majority of the book. I don't think it's as deep and detailed as it's purported, though there are moments where it's nicely shown, such as their connection at the Incarnate dance. The two share a nice connection to music as well, which I appreciated in its tones through the book. However, as the story chose to round out, I found that I had to suspend disbelief at some of the revelations about Sam, and Ana's role pretty much lent to a more passive role for a little while until she faces one of the members of the Council and also an up-close-and-personal encounter with a dragon. I also had to suspend disbelief because I felt like I still didn't have a grasp on the system of which Incarnate souls would "stop" reincarnating. There was also a sense of incompletion about Li's noted fate as the story went on, because I felt the ire and hatred of Li's character towards the beginning of the book, but the end somewhat makes Li's character feel more like an afterthought. I think up until about 85-90% of the book, I would've rated my enjoyment of this at about 4 stars, but because the ending felt so mishandled, it gets more of a 3 from me. I think I'll read the next book in the series to see where it goes, but I'll admit I'm not as excited about it as other fantasy/supernatural titles that have been released this year so far. Overall score: 3/5
