It's disappointing. I'm a huge fan of Korman, even though I should have outgrown him, and I love the first Bugs Potter book. But this one... not so great. I guess that's why it's long out of print and was pretty difficult to find a copy of. There's almost no continuity (it might be a prequel. I'm not sure) and the characterizations are less interesting.

A nice document of a scene neglected by legend. I could've done with more oral history and less poorly-written narrative. This book helps backup the banality of punk, especially when read after Please Kill Me. Most of these dudes come off as vacuous characters who work really hard at standing for nothing. There are some positive takeaways, though. Seeing the importance of the Touch and Go zine was cool. The young-versus-old dynamic was interesting, too. Punks project nonconformist values, but the young kids write off the older punks as soon as they start to deviate from the dominant sound.
When i bought this book i was looking for a psy-cop romance kind of thing. It took me forever to get around to reading it and when I did, oops. This book isn't what I expected it to be but it was very good. It's not a romance at all its more a sociological study with a gay main character and set in a fictitious world. It drug a little around page 300 or so it picked back up quickly.
Wonderful accounts of four-season vegetable harvesting in Maine! As I'm planning a new garden at my new house, I continually turn to this book for inspiration and organic tips.

Wikipedia tells me that fans and critics were disappointed with Pynchon's 1990 comeback. After a 17-year hiatus, everyone was probably expecting the equivalent of Finnegans Wake - but in retrospect, as this fits snugly at what is now the mid-career point, thank goodness it wasn't. Instead we have a sort of counter-culture fantasy that echoes any number of things before and since - the Illuminatus trilogy, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, Ishmael Reed's Yellow Back Radio Broke Down, Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash - all of them worthwhile, none exactly Big Books that you have to agonize about a lot.

The author won the Pulitzer in 2008 for this novel, his first BTW and I can certainly say it was well deserved. This was a fantastic read from beginning to end and I especially enjoyed the bits of history of the Dominican Republic added in as footnotes. I will definitely be on the look out for more from this very promising author!
