I only gave it 3 stars because I felt the story was rushed, especially for the price. I love the Alpha Male Dom coming together with a Strong Woman to challenge him. I'm partial to that theme! The sex was hot, and explicit, which is something I look for in my erotica. It had so much more potential for more character development. I liked both main characters so much. I wanted to LOVE Hunter. Kata was someone I could totally relate to! When starting the book I couldn't want to see how they would evolve together. Their meeting was so unique, and I enjoyed that I couldn't easily predict their story. I understand book this is part of a series, but this seems to be part of a trend that I'm starting to notice, to put out a smaller story that would actually be just a few chapters in a larger book. That is the only explanation I could come up, with regard as to why I felt the story was so rushed. I would prefer to pay more for a complete story than the pieces for a moderate price. Please know that I am not cheap when it comes to my reading - we all know erotica can be an expensive addiction. lol. That being said, I didn't feel this book was cheap in the eReader market, when I paid $9.99 for it! I will look to read more Shayla Black, but with the hope that I don't feel that I'm being short changed when I'm investing my time and money.

As a novel on its own, it's great. As a prequel to Jane Eyre, I hate it.

Fantastic read! There was a haunting quality about Duet with the loss of Malcolm and Aillil trying to find him. Very beautiful story. I truly hated for Duet to end. This is a keeper and the emotions of the story are what you will remember.

best on audio!
Actually enjoyed this quite a bit once I forced myself to start reading. Historical novel set in 1936, but flashing back to history of same small town in Kansas back in 1918. Newbery winner this year. (Already forgotten many details, but was pleasantly surprised as I read it.)

Marian Babson's books are always entertaining, and this one was no different. It was slow to start, bogged down in back story and character set-up that seemed to go nowhere, but once the murder occurred, everything came in a whoosh of excited activity and it was hard to put down. It's well worth the effort if you can drag yourself through the first 12 or so chapters. The mystery is not too complicated, and as a read, you figure out the answer to "who-done-it" long before the deed is done, and thus before you realize you had.
Good sappy love story, especially when she is so in love with him after 3 dates (a little unbelievable). The abuse described in the book seemed very real.

Surprisingly readable despite the hype. If you like memoirs, read this.

I feel like 2 stars is a little harsh, but a 3 is giving just too much credit. I would give this a 2.5 I've read other stories with similar plots, but this one just failed to come across with sincerity. Ramona's Santiago's life has been full of people leaving her. The father she never knew, the mother that left and never returned, the grandmother who died. And now she feels like she's losing her brother to his new wife and soon-to-be-born baby. Although I've never went through any of that, I could see where she was coming from feeling sad about her brother's wedding, but she kinda over did it. Deputy Joe Lone Wolf works with Mona's brother and is put in charge while Rick is on his honeymoon. Although Joe is a simple man, he's hard to like. He's always been 'just' a friend to Mona. Always wanting to be more to her, but never taking the chance. With Mona moving back to town, their paths cross and neither one is admitting how they feel. It's really frustrating when throughout the middle of the book both characters won't even admit their feelings. To me books have 3 parts: 1 setting the story up. 2 the characters interacting. 3 when they get together and live happily ever after. This book stayed on 1 & 2 way too long. Which brings me to my next point. 3 'when they get together'. It happened so suddenly I was like 'whoa' what the crap changed. I flipped to the next chapter and suddenly Joe is asking Mona out on a date. From there I would say it was pretty smooth sailing. Of course, like most books, a small bump tries to force them apart, but other than that they live happily ever after.
