Well, so most of this is probably made up. Does that matter to me? Sort of. When I first read this I thought, "Wow, important and interesting read." I was kinda psyched. When stupid Oprah (Why does she appear so often in my reviews?) exposed James Freys lies and he said something to the effect of "This is a real-life fictional story." I don't know what that means. So in the end, I still like it, but I'll re-read it someday as a fictional story. And it won't be as good as the first time around.
jusfuckin read it

I liked the format of this book. Each chapter was a different time in her life - chronologically. One chapter was written about a neighbor of the main character, and it really had nothing to do with the book, but I was still intrigued. It's minus a star because the subject matter was hard to follow. I hope she's still in therapy, but she's on the right track. Here are quotes I liked: "I believe the common term 'lifeguard' signifies his desire to copulate, i.e., to guard the perpetuation of the species." "I couldn't help staring, either - it was like she was a different species from me. She had the lollipop proportions of a model - big head, stick figure - pale skin, wintergreen eyes, and a nose barely bid enough to break out of." "You can feel that he wants to own you - not like an object but like a good dream he wants to keep having. He lets you know that you already own him." "I say that getting married isn't like winning the Miss America Pageant; it doesn't all come down to the bathing suit competition. 'What do you think it comes down to?' she says. I say, 'Baton twirling."

In the concluding book of the series, Chloe is now the accepted Chosen One of the Mai even though she feels unworthy and unprepared to lead them. However she now has problems not only with the Tenth Order but also with some members of the Mai. She finds dealing with leadership difficult and dealing with a five thousand year old feud aggravating. Now she has to decide how to solve these problems.

Brings back memories of childhood. Children normally look up to their parents and are proud of what they do for life. The inability of the child's lawyer-father to protect the right of the black innocent man was heart tugging. This really deserves to be a classic and a must read for young people.
Great stories. Tight and economic with words. (That's my way of complimenting.)

** spoiler alert ** I'm not quite sure why I didn't enjoy this more - I started reading it convinced I would love it. But for some reason I struggled. It may be beautifully written (and I realise I don't usually notice this for myself, being more wrapped up in whether a book is absorbing or not) but I kept having to make myself go back to it. On the other hand I was interested in the tragic story of Roseanne. After I finished it I tried to decide what it was that made me underwhelmed - there were a number of clunky plot devices - I wasn't sure why Seane/John took the baby only to give it up to Roseanne's poisonous in-laws, why did he take the baby but leave her close to death? And the ending - well! But it wasn't only that, I found the two different "voices" far too similar - one was meant to be a barely educated 100 year old Irish woman who had spent the last 60 years in an institution, the other a 65 year old well-educated man brought up in England - yet there "speech" seemed barely distinguishable. But I think maybe the answer is that for me "beautifully written" does not replace an absorbing story - this was close to that but just missed out.
