I had been reading a lot of Hemingway and I sort of wanted a break from That Style; I definitely got it with this book. Roy's writing is breathtaking. To steal a sentiment from another review I just read, she puts words together in ways that should make no sense at all but flawlessly evoke the sense of being there. It reminds me of Tonguecat or The Sound and the Fury a bit in that regard. The story is dark and sad and horrible, which I resented at times, but ultimately I forgive it for its astonishing beauty. Also, something I don't see other reviews pointing out: this book is *funny*! Am I the only one who took that from it? While the dominant notes are certainly pretty dismal, the children are still children and Roy shows us how they play with words and think about what the worlds shows them in completely ordinary childlike, hilarious ways.

June 14, 2011 Ash is a teenage girl who is angry at the world. Angry at her mom for dying and leaving her alone. Angry at her dad for refusing to take her in. And especially angry at her cousin Nina for having everything. That kind of anger inevitably draws attention. The problem is, the spirit who first noticed Ash's anger is now focused on Nina. Can Ash figure out what is going on and find it in her heart to save her cousin? This has always been one of my least favorite of de Lint's books. Much as I love his work, I'm usually disappointed in his young adult novels. I love his books for his characters and I never relate to the teens very well. I don't know if it's just me or if he truly doesn't develop them as well. In this case, Ash is a pretty typical troubled teen and Nina is a pretty typical goody-two-shoes. So maybe it is him... Anyway, there's nothing terribly new here, although it was nice to come across the first references to Cassie and Bones. The underlying hope and faith in human decency that I consider another hallmark of de Lint are also here. The world can always use more stories about forgiveness, love, and the power to change for the better, right? I wouldn't recommend this to a new de Lint reader, but fans should definitely read it. Currently re-reading... 2007? This is one of de Lint's more Native American novels. It's full of teenage angst, but it is more of a young adult novel. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more when I was at that age myself.
Very dense. A slow read. The story is excellent. One of those books you can reread a thousand times and always learn something new.

This is the first part of the USA Trilogy and I enjoyed it. The book certainly has that sprawling, "great American novel" feel about it. Or maybe it's the left counterpart to "Atlas Shrugged" (it has that clunky dialogue, go on forever, huge ensemble cast of characters feel as well). As a result, I think he should have just played that long suit and dropped the literary pretensions of the newsreel & camera's eye devices. Just give me the action straight with no chaser, Johnny. At any rate, I am enjoying the developing epic, but I can't help but wonder what experience Dos Passos had with women that made him think they all believe everything is so "exciting". Sheesh!
What can I say? Everyone knows how amazing Tolkein is.

A great adventure story. A young climber accompanied by a Nepalese friend attempts Everest under the tutelage of his father.

Disappointed in this one. Buchan did not excell in making a reader care about a fictional place, even when inhabited by great characters introduced in other books. Oh well.

Actually, I quite enjoyed this book because it showed emotion. The storyline wasn't extremely attention grabbing, but I thought it was beautifully written.

This was an amazing first hand account of what it was like living in Detroit through the 1980s and 1990s. I recommend it!
