The first of three, this book is slightly childish, whereas the sequels are more adult oriented. As the series goes on the plots twist and get darker and more sinister, but the main character Lyra is a shining light through all the darkness. These books will make you look at the world around you in a whole new way.

A unique premise, and an enjoyable read, despite a few slow chapters in the middle. But it made me sad.

The lengthiest book in the series is also declared excellent, but also needed to build up some of the story behind it's characters, ergo, a little bit of a lower rating.

To crib a line from Roger Ebert: I hated, hated, hated this book. Paulo Coelho knows how to put a sentence together in a pleasing way, and the audiobook is beautifully read by Jeremy Irons. Everything else about this book I hated. Every idea, character, plot point, and line of dialogue made me want to scream. Sitting in my car on the Beltway and listening to this, I did often find myself groaning, making gagging noises, rolling my eyes, and shouting at my iPod. The story is called a “fable” but this is no excuse for this kind of heavy-handed didacticism. I hate to think that anyone could actually believe or live their life by this kind of New Age mumbo-jumbo: listening to “the Soul of the World” which “wants you to succeed” at your “personal legend” (until something bad happens, and then of course it’s the “Soul of the World” testing you to make sure you’re worthy,) only the wise can understand love at first sight, you’ll succeed at anything if you believe hard enough, etc. I also have to fault Coelho for breaking the classic “show, don’t tell” rule of writing. When a character actually says “You see, I fear change,” something in your storytelling has gone wrong. I can recommend this for only two situations: you love Jeremy Irons, or you enjoy being slapped in the face by a very heavy hand of New Age crap.

i had really high expecatations from this after thoroughly enjoying We Need To Talk About Kevin. remembering that WNTTAK was also a slow-starter, i gave this book 300 pages before i couldn't take it anymore and gave up. perhaps the book would've been more enjoyable if all the main character weren't so unsympathetic but i found myself wanting to slap her in both realities. speaking of which, the paralell realities premise was an extremely interesting but so poorly handled it was laughable. shriver opts for obvious distinctions that are clunky and off-putting, often just switching the 'he said's and 'she said's in conversations to show contrast. very very disappointing and ultimately unreadable.
When I found out that my twelve-year-old granddaughter was reading and liking this book, I decided to read it also so we could discuss. I liked it too. But it kept reminding me of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Percy Jackson, (the book is the first in a series called Percy Jackson and the Olympians) is the son of Poseidon and a mortal woman. He has problems (ADHD, a temper, a missing dad, a disgusting step-father) and he has been expelled from numerous private schools. Forget about public school. The summer he goes to Camp Half-Blood, he learns for the first time who he really is and gets sent on a quest to recover the lightning bolt of Zeus. Non-stop action, lots of funny bits, kids having to figure out things for themselves; all make it an entertaining story and I can see why it has sold gazillions, also why reluctant readers and especially boys like it. Riodan has cleverly combined all the elements. Camp Half-Blood is Percy's Hogwarts. He has his half-blood friends, each of whom has a Greek god or goddess for one parent. The quest. A boy wanting to please and get recognition from his absent father. Hell is entered through Los Angeles, Mt Olympus via a skyscraper in Manhattan. A Las Vegas amusement park/hotel is a locale where kids never want to leave and lose all track of time. Despite all the "borrowing" this is a great way to introduce kids to mythology and is much more fun to read than The Golden Fleece.

A little predictable at times, but keep in mind it's for young adults. I found it to be refreshing and a fun little story.

I'm so glad this series is finally over. This book WAS one of the better ones but I can't believe I hung out long enough to finish the whole thing. It wasn't horrible but DEFINITELY better things out there to read :/
this book was amazing. the story of a man who defies society to find his true self is truly one of hope & freedom. this book taught me that you shouldn't conform to what everyone else believes is right. you should be happy to be allowed personal thought & freedom's that people like equality 7-2521 didn't have in his society. his society was cruel & imperfect, unlike what they wanted to put off. thought was not allowed. nothing was allowed. Anthem is one of the best books i've read, this is truly one of Ayn Rand's best works of literature.
