(Good for Teens too) Wow, I loved this book. It touched my heart so many times and I really enjoyed the protagonist Truly. She is a wonderful character who stays with you. She endures so much, inspiring the reader to cheer her on to the end.

"The" classic work on the Late Republic (before Gruen, which is largely in response to this book), Syme envisions the first century BC Roman world as a crumbling Republic inhabited by squabbling cliques of aristocrats and over-mighty generals. He classifies the shift between the true "Republic" before Sulla and the institution of the Principate in 27 BC as a true 'Revolution.' I love Syme, and I love his ideas, even if I don't entirely agree with his admittedly extremist arguement...

Have you ever felt so moved that it's as if you're possessed? Reading The History of Love was like having my chest cracked open, the words flooding into me. Some passages I loved: The floorboards creaked under my weight. There were books everywhere. There were pens, and a blue glass vase, an ashtray from the Dolder Grand in Zurich, the rusted arrow of a weather vane, a little brass hourglass, sand dollars on the windowsill, a pair of binoculars, an empty wine bottle that served as a candle holder, wax melted down the neck. I touched this thing and that. At the end, all that's left of you are your possessions. Perhaps that's why I've never been able to throw anything away. Perhaps that's why I hoarded the world: with the hope that when I died, the sum total of my things would suggest a life larger than the one I lived. And this: Every year, the memories I have of my father become more faint, unclear, and distant. Once they were vivid and true, then they became like photographs, and now they are more like photographs of photographs. But sometimes, at rare moments, a memory of him will return to me with such suddenness and clarity that all the feeling I've pushed down for years springs out like a jack-in-the-box.... One more line, one that caused the words to swim on the page for me: "The truth is the thing I invented so I could live." The novel unfolds through several character viewpoints, through different narrative forms - first person accounts, journal entries, excerpts from a novel within the novel itself called The History of Love, even poetry. There is a literary mystery, at the heart of which is a love story that inspires other love stories, so that the novel itself is a history of love.

Ava is a mother a friend a daughter and a wife, but she has lost herself, fussing over her father Charlie (a wonderful character) her two daughters, not to mention holding down a job and seeing less of her husband. Something happens which forces things to change. Hilarious in places, was sorry the book ended i couldn't put it down.

On the basis of Nazanin's review. Plus I loved Sophie's Garden when I was younger. I've read it now, and I had the same sense of awe as when I was reading Sophie's Garden. He's so good. Just the way the two stories parallel.

In-fucking-credible! This probably my all time favorite book and perhaps the most underrated of DFW's works. "The Suffering Channel" is beyond magnificent; it is the best artistic response to 9/11 that I've encountered, and yet it never mentions 9/11. It tackles the sadism and spectacle of the WTC attacks and it does so with the examination of shit and celebrity and celebrity shit. As with the rest of his work, peppered with the typical one-line philsophical apothegms that may have your head spinning for days.

I first read this at university, but decided that it was long past time to reread it. In the first few pages, I couldn't see why it had made such a strong impression on me. But by the end of the "Editor's Notes", I'd remembered. And there's so much about it that I'd forgotten - especially the latter part of it. So a rare star upgrade from my original rating. It tells the story of a 'justified' sinner, who believes he's already one of God's elect on Earth, and therefore his place in Heaven is already assured, and then throws a supernatural twist into it. Neatly told from from two different perspectives, it's a fascinating study of how the Devil can twist the beliefs of someone who things he's one of the Elect, and twist them on their head to make him destroy those who try to do good, and ultimately himself. In my view, the bit that's really clever about it, is that the first version of events you see is the more objective "Editor's Notes"; and then it revisits the same events - and many more - from the point of view of the 'justified sinner', who manages to rationalise murder as doing God's work, when in fact he's doing the complete opposite.
