This was the first adult book I've read that falls into the steampunk genre. At first, it was hard to process all the automatons that Meljean Brook describes. As I read, I like to create a visual image in my mind of the world, people, and items that are incorporated into a story. Trying to picture the various automatons took some time but it was worth it. I'm not fascinated with this genre, and the following that it has. The world of Steampunk books allow for so many possibilities in recreating history, inventing new technologies, and lead to some interesting characters. In "The Iron Duke", Meljean Brook takes advantage of all of these elements. I found it interesting that the story takes in what we think of as Victorian England but there are events described that occurred two hundred years prior to the story.... in the 17th century with robots and nanoagents. That's just wild and I loved it! Of course the action and romance added to my reaction to the book, lol. I cannot wait to read the next book in the Iron Seas series, which is due to be released in November.

My 9th grade English teacher was not able to convince me that this is a great book and I haven't changed my mind. Read this if you love old men and or the sea. I thought it was boooooooooooooring.

I have not read any Dickens since high school, but when Oprah picked this and 'Great Expectations' as her last books I jumped right on the bandwagon. For me this was everything a great novel should be - compelling characters, unexpected plot twists, moral and social issues and writing that as a reader I could lose myself in. So why not 5 stars? Well, some of the plot twists were a little gimmicky and the romance a little schmaltzy. This edition is annotated which really helped me understand some of the more obscure references to the French Revolution as well as the source of certain passages/quotes. A huge help.

No i didn't finish this book. Not to many book make me angry but this one did. If you're going to write a book isn't it supposed to be edited? This book is amazing! It has everything--a heart-stopping hero, a sassy pre-teen, a can-do heroine, meddling neighbors, loving family, and emotion upon emotion. The tension between the characters jumps right off the page. Don't start this book if you don't have time to finish it same day, you'll not be able to put it down! :)
