Everyone, at some point in time, has reason to worry about the future. These days your reasons could include global warming, the increasing divide between the rich and the poor, violence around the world and within our own borders, general intolerance and selfishness, and a seemingly lowering cultural and emotional intelligence. If you're like me, there are times when you feel damn near as low as you can go about such things. McCarthy apparently feels the same way, and his neo-western No Country for Old Men is a lamentation over the past and its lost ways. It's also the most pulpy, violent, and page-turning thriller I've ever read. To some extent, every generation has felt the same way, that the new generation will lead us into nothingness, and I'm sure some readers think that this book is just another example of that fear written by an admittedly aging author. Of course an old guy is going to complain about those darn kids! By setting the novel in the early 1980s, however, I think McCarthy reminds us that we've always felt this way, and probably always will. And that's a pretty depressing thought, but we still go on. McCarthy writes at a clipped pace, and I found it hard to put the book down. What is he saying by making the violence and despair so entertaining to read?

This book has an interesting concept but it was a little too drawn out. When authors try to write books about their eye opening experiences, they tend to write more about how they got there than the actual experience, thus was the case with this book. I thought it would be more adventurous, but he talked more about the girl who dumped him before the wedding and broke his heart.

I really couldn't get into this book - I didn't even finish it. It's poorly written. The story of Three Cups of Tea was really ispiring, but the continuation of it was a bit overboard.
3 ½ Stars This review is also published at http://thebookaholiccat.com The blurb of the book summarizes pretty well what it is about. Rivers of London (Midnight Riot – USA title) is the first book in the Peter Grantseries by Ben Aaronovich. Since I learn about this book I have been looking forward to read it. Couple of days ago I finally got to it. My first impressions were really good. Peter Grant is a very pleasant and likable character who discovers there is a secret magic world within our world, with ghosts, deities, vampires and many more weird beings. Grant is a clever man but he is easily distracted. He is learning magic but he can leave his XXI Century-self behind, he is always trying to apply magic using modern concoctions. This makes him feel more realistic. The supporting characters especially Leslie and Inspector Nightingale are nice and interesting with some twists and mysteries attached to them making the story a little bit more entertaining. The interaction between characters was fun and refreshing. The events of the book occurred in London. It’s obvious that Mr. Aaronovich is a local because of the knowledge of the city. The description of the places was very detailed, sometimes I thought it was a bit too much, especially if you are not a Londoner or are not familiar with the city, this can become a little bit overwhelming, like in my case, I was forced to look for a map of the city to get my whereabouts of the action. If the book had included a map this might have been a little bit easier. I had a big problem with the pace of the book. The first third part of the book was great, I was in loved with the characters, with the plot, with the writing and I was thinking I found my new favorite series. But after that third part it suddenly stalled and it became so dull I almost DNF. I hate not finishing books or movies so I forced myself to continue reading, I gave a 20 more pages “last chance”, if not I was going to closed it down and sadly forget about it. I’m glad I forced myself to continue reading those 20 more pages, because the last third part of the book picked up the pace and it became interesting again. My final though: Rivers of London/Midnight Riot is an innovative book, with rich characters, a very vivid world and three interlaced plots. If it was not for the pace problem I encountered it would have been a perfect book. I liked the humor of the book, it’s what I called “smarty” funny. When I was reading Rivers of London/Midnight Riot it reminded me somehow of the TV series Doctor Who and later on when I did some research about the author I learned he had written for the TV series. If you are a fan of Doctor Who, you might like this book. And if you are a Londoner or familiar with the city you might enjoy it more than me. I will read the next book of this series Moon Over Soho hoping it will continue with the good pace of the first and last parts of Rivers of London/Midnight Riot.
Really enjoyed this book...especially the details of bohemian life in Europe during this timeframe!

This one took me about 200 pages to really get into. Not that the first 200 pages are boring, but the story doesn't really take off until spooky things start happening. This is interesting because the character drama (the custody battle, the relationship between Mike and Mattie, and any scene with Max Devore) is far more intriguing--to me, anyway--than the supernatural elements of the story. Still more interesting is it's a ghost story centered around a custody battle. When I read the synopsis I thought it'd be boring. Overall it is far from dull, but there are dry parts and awkward moments where the two very different subplots clash.
A good read. Something different- and not religious. Just fun.
Uch. Conflicted. You've got the plagiarism stuff and then there's the (view spoiler) storyline and then there's all these things and I don't know what to think anymore. Definitely better than City of Fallen Angels, but maybe these books just aren't for me anymore. (view spoiler)
