This book was so far-fetched, it was hard to read. A young girl is allowed to go to Europe on her own, with all the unknowns in her situation. I kept reading, but mentally I couldn't get past this. Not for me. I think it was written for teens, but I would not let my daughter read this.

Woah. When I was at my library, browsing through the YOUTH FICTION A - N section for Such a Pretty Girl (which I now know is banned...what the hell?) and saw How It Ends, I absent-mindlessly threw it into my arms, thinking, 'Eh.' I mean, the summary makes this novel look like a story about some foolish teenage girl and her boyfriend who doesn't care enough, and to keep it interesting, they added a dying grandmother to keep readers crying. Hey, it was my first MTV novel. I would say I didn't know what to expect, but that's a lie. I expected some fairy-tale relationship with a happy ending and lots of sex. Trust me, though, this novel was NOT it. Laura Wiess is a genius, if not for her general plots (where does she come up with this stuff), then for her characters and the way she can include ten stories in one book without making your brain slowly melt. By the end of this book, I didn't know what story affected me most, let alone which one was supposed to affect me most. Hell, I didn't even know which one was supposed to be the main idea. Let's run a list of the possibilities, shall we? 1. Hanna's school/love life. 2. Helen's life after meeting Lon. 3. Seth's life. 4. Jesse's life. 5. Her parent's life. 6. Helen's life prior to meeting Lon. 7. The Doehm's life. 8. Margarete Doehm's life prior to...well, you know. The psycho-ness. 9. Dr. Doehm's life priot to becoming a psycho. 10. Louise Bell Closson's life. See what I mean? It's a lot to think about, and took me a while to read. So throughout the novel, I tried to make sense of my feelings towards it. It's okay. I hate it. What the hell? I can basically feel the crappy ending already... No way. What's up with all these plots? Laura is either a genius, or has some weird anxiety disorder. It wasn't until I read the last page that I realized that all these things are what make it a worthwile novel. The indecisiveness is how I know that this author knew what she was doing. Bravo, Wiess. And while I know many of you hated the ending, I hate to say that I loved it. Well, not that I was smiling and feeling all that great when it happened (because if you do feel that way, you must have issues), but because I felt it was the perfect close, and the only way this story would have been tied off true to it's message: not everything turns out to be a fairy tale.

I read this book in anticipation of seeing the movie. With all the Oscar-related publicity about the movie, my expectations for the book were high and I think I knew too much about the plot going into the book. Its an interesting, thought-provoking read, but rather short and I was left wanting to know more about the two main characters. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie now, when it comes out on DVD.

Love it when Mule hollow and Dry Creek come together! This was another great storyline for both Debra Clopton and Janet Tronstad. The characters that we have all come to know and love still make their appearances in their respective towns. I love how the fact that sisters are trying to find their own niece and nephew and in the process find out more about themselves and the family they never knew. Both face uphill battles with the guardians of both of the children, but in the end love of family wins out and both find a their match that God has picked just for them. I also love how the fact that adoption is talked about...there are negative and positive experiences for all involved. Ultimately one can't put all their faith and hope in man, only God can truly fill that roll as our Father. The analogy to us being adopted into his family is woven through both of these tails and the test of faith each person encounters along the way only makes them stronger. Can't wait to see what happens next in Mule Hollow and Dry Creek!

This book was a load of fun. A LOAD. The blending of steampunk, knights, magick, vampyres and other supernatural critters just flat out worked. The mystery of what the vampyres were working toward, the flashes of magick, the rigid social lines that both Caroline and Merrick were trying not to cross and the five gifted children that tied it all together made for a sassy, spunky, well-crafted world with surprises hiding around every corner. First off, I loved the children. They each had their own strengths and they all looked out for one another. They had made themselves into a family even though they weren't all related by blood. That becomes a sort of theme as Caroline begins to view them as more than just her charges and Merrick takes them under his wing despite his occasional misgivings. When one of them is threatened, they all rush in to help - from the adults right on down to their clockwork dog. Caroline is initially reluctant to get involved with Merrick's household. She's been treated badly by other male employers and she has no desire to go down that road again. Once she gets steamrolled (haha! I said steamrolled and I'm talking about a steampunk book! I love it when words come together like that!) into helping Merrick and the children, she finds that all of them get under her skin and into her heart. Merrick's desire to do the right thing, both for the children and for Caroline, makes him a sweet, chivalrous hero. The fact that he's a hunky knight with a handful of magick doesn't hurt him in the least. This book pretty much hit the spot for me on every level. It was sexy, clockwork-y, violent and sweet.
