By far the most Risque book on my fav list, but I can't help loving it. It was a close call between this book and "Of Mice and Men" (Oh why couldn't the man just have his rabbit farm? It makes me want to cry.) "East of Eden" just sucked me in. I read this book all the way through in 2 sittings because I couldn't put it down.

You'll cry as you listen to this. One must read this simply to know the absolute depths to which humanity can sink but it's not easy. However, forewarned is fore-armed. In December 1937, in the capital of China, one of the most brutal massacres in the long annals of wartime barbarity occurred. The Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking and within weeks not only looted and burned the defenseless city but systematically raped, tortured and murdered more than 300,000 Chinese civilians. Amazingly, the story of this atrocity- one of the worst in world history- continues to be denied by the Japanese government.

It sucked me in and I really liked the story for the first few hundred pages. It did get a bit repetative with certain aspects toward the end. It's a good mindless quick read, so I'm on to reading the 2nd book in the series.
Wow. They wrote really dopey letters to each other.
Still have to read this, but it got RAVE reviews when it first came out. I'll give it 3 just because I know it'll surpass that rating once I actually read it!
This book inspired a major paradigm shift for me. Shortly after reading it, I enrolled in acupuncture school, and life has not been the same, will never be the same. I have to reread this book every so often for its crucial reminder: that nonviolence can work and must work and will work to change the world...but we also have to work...we need to heal ourselves and others. I highly recommend this book.

When Pat first told me that she was reading a book about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary, I immediately thought snoresville. However despite the seemingly boring subject, this book was a fascinating page-turner! The characters are intriguing, the settings enthralling, and even the details on the making of the dictionary itself drew me in. I would highly recommend it (and not in order to doze off in the evening!).
Great book offering a window not only into a brilliant mind but also into a pivotal time in history.

Well written and a beautiful story, but a bit on the depressing side.

I loved it when I was young and still like it. The movie made from this book is very good too.
