I first became interested in reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini after reading The Kite Runner last year. So, when my sister checked it out from the library I was very eager to see what it was all about. Words can't describe my reaction the the novel. Simply put, it was amazing.... A Thousand Splendid Suns is a fictional novel that takes place in Kabul, Afghanistan. The main characters, Mariam and Laila, are both wives of the a shoemaker named Rasheed, the antagonist of the novel. The novel tells the tale of both women, how they ended up in the terrible positions of becoming wives of a terrible, abusive man. The novel moves between the stories of each lady, starting with Mariam and then continuing to the story of Laila. Mariam grew up as a poor girl in a village, the illegitimate child of a wealthy. When her mother dies she goes to live with her father, however, she is forced into marriage. Laila grew up in a more privileged life, but still had many challenges to face. She lost both of her brothers to the war against the USSR, and her mother was thrown into a deep depression. As she grew older she developed a very close relationship with her friend Tariq, but as fate would have it they are brutally thrown apart. Desperate, and faced with no other questions, Laila agrees to become Rasheed's second wife. The rest of the novel travels through the life of both wives with their terribly abusive husband, and the hope and strength they find in each other and their children. Both Laila and Mariam's greatest challenge is living with their husband, Rasheed. This problem manifests itself in several Man (or in this case, woman) vs. man conflicts. As well as this, there is also a great deal of conflicts between the protagonists and society (man vs. society). They are forced to live under a rule which gives no voice to women, and completely subjugates them to oppression and hardships. These conflicts give way to quite a few themes, my personal favorite being the theme that perseverance is the key to survival in any situation, no matter how bad it is. Mariam and Laila continue to persevere and survive all the hardships of life, even though they have little to live for. The constant dedication of both girls definitely had me rethinking the amount of commitment I put into things. Like themes, there are also quite a few symbols in the novel. First, and foremost, would be Rasheed. He symbolizes completely the harsh, traditional role of a man in eastern countries like Afghanistan. More importantly than the use of symbols, I believe, is Khaled Hosseini's ability to make a book come to life. To be honest, when I first read A Thousand Splendid Suns I thought it was a true story. Khaled Hosseini makes the smallest details seem important, without overdoing it. "Though there had been moments of beauty in it, Mariam knew that life for the most part had been unkind to her. But as she walked the final twenty paces, she could not help but wish for more of it. … One last time, Mariam did as she was told" [Hosseini 329:]. I love the way he can convey his analysis of ideas so thoroughly that I never have trouble understanding what he is trying to say. I've never see any other author do that as well as Khaled Hosseini does. Like I said before, it's extremely difficult for me to describe how much I appreciated and loved this book. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to a read a story that will shake them to the core, and leave them feeling like they've gained something. And though I don't feel like it's up to me to say so, I would say that A Thousand Splendid Suns is much more interesting than The Kite Runner, though both are still wonderful novels.

One of the best literary books I've ever read. Tragic to the point of crushingly depressing, and yet beautiful. Not at all what one may think after looking at the trailer for the film.

This book was amazing! I love the way Lisa See writes! She is so engaging, and you just dive right into the story! She has a way of making you think you know exactly what is going on, and then in one paragraph, the perspective is all changed! It makes you want to reread every book!

This was a wonderful book, and will always hold a place in my heart. However, I just don't think that it deserves quite as much praise as it's received. There are certainly more entertaining poems for children, or at least they're a little less acid-induced.

By the time I read this book, I had seen a gazillion reviews that said it was Fabulous, Perfect, Wonderful. That made me think the book would reach up and embrace me (sort of like a Katherine Paterson book) from the very first page. It wasn't like that. I had to start over at least three times because I couldn't make sense of who was telling the story, who the mysterious 'you' was, and what the deal was with the mother. But when I did start for the third time, it occurred to me that I hadn't yet tried to incinerate the book or trample it in frustration. So maybe it was pretty darn good. By the time I finished it, I understood the story about a classroom full of kids who begged their teacher to start reading it again...immediately...when she finished their multi-week read aloud. Yes, indeed. I know that I cannot in any way do justice to the plot(s), so I'll just say that this book was worthy of the Newbery that it won.

Enjoyed reading it. Much better than the movie, to me.

Wow. I loved the idea of this book, but I was SO disappointed with the morality in it. Esp since it's YA lit.

Author Vida Winter, who has written numerous best-sellers, is famous for publishing a book originally titled "Thirteen Tales" - although the book only contains twelve. Although people chalked this up to a misprint in the title that was later corrected, biographer Margaret Lea knows that somewhere, this final story must exist. Lea, a young woman who works in her father's bookstore, is called upon by Ms. Winter to come write the story of her life. The author has previously been reclusive, so this request comes as quite a surprise to Margaret and her father. Every previous interview Ms. Winter has given has contained a different version of her life. So why has she chosen Margaret as the person who will hear the truth? Meanwhile, Margaret is undergoing her own transformation. A part of her past that her parents have tried to keep under wraps has been haunting her, and coming to terms with it has grown increasingly difficult - especially with some of the parallels she is noticing in Ms. Winter's life story. An absolutely captivating read - Setterfield winds the stories flawlessly around one another, and makes the characters both believable and endearing. I didn't want this one to end!

It was disappointing for a number of reasons, namely the downgrade of Lyra's character from badass to Will's sidekick love interest (relatively speaking). The introduction of the little spy characters didn't do much for me, and I didn't care for the other world with Mary Malone at all. It straight-up did not interest me and there was too much of it. Mrs. Coulter's character development was not organic and did not ring true. The reenactment of the fall was good in theory but kind of dumb in execution. The journey through the underworld took too long to hold my interest. The priest assassin was built up and then discarded as an afterthought. The huge battle and the bomb scare were also anticlimactic. Stylistically, it seemed off compared to the previous two books, especially the dialogue, which was a bit more wordy, stiff, and formal than previously, and it was distracting. I like the conclusions Pullman came to, but the way he reached them was not good.
