Boy, this book just FLEW along. I felt like I blinked and I was 80 pages in, and it didn't really let up all the way to the end. So, as a smoothly-written, interesting non-fiction book, I think it succeeded. The part I had trouble with was the subject matter, for a couple of different reasons. One, some of the descriptions of surgeries, cell sample collection, etc., were rather gross. Two, I had an extremely difficult time reading about the behavior of some of the participants, particularly Deborah Lacks and her family. If you want to see the dangers of a lack of education (not to mention of inbreeding), look no further. I think the youngest Lackses are pulling themselves out of the pit, and I wish them every good thing... but wow... they have had a lot to overcome. I think Skloot managed to convey it all with a sympathetic voice. This book was shocking and stimulating and an interesting read. It also had a high frustration factor for me, both from seeing what a lack of education can do, and from seeing how people who are educated can still behave like complete jerkwads. (Take, for example, the scientist who gave Deborah his medical textbook on cell culture in order to "explain" how her mother's cells were being used and had the gall to AUTOGRAPH it for her and send her on her way. Some help.) Some of the scenes out of this book felt like they came out of a B sci-fi movie. Anyway, if you want to learn more about how cell research works today (and what your rights are - or are not), or to find out about the history of the HeLa cells (and their originator, Henrietta Lacks) and their impact and implications, definitely read this book.
