Boy, this book just FLEW along. I felt like I blinked and I was 80 pages in, and it didn't really let up all the way to the end. So, as a smoothly-written, interesting non-fiction book, I think it succeeded. The part I had trouble with was the subject matter, for a couple of different reasons. One, some of the descriptions of surgeries, cell sample collection, etc., were rather gross. Two, I had an extremely difficult time reading about the behavior of some of the participants, particularly Deborah Lacks and her family. If you want to see the dangers of a lack of education (not to mention of inbreeding), look no further. I think the youngest Lackses are pulling themselves out of the pit, and I wish them every good thing... but wow... they have had a lot to overcome. I think Skloot managed to convey it all with a sympathetic voice. This book was shocking and stimulating and an interesting read. It also had a high frustration factor for me, both from seeing what a lack of education can do, and from seeing how people who are educated can still behave like complete jerkwads. (Take, for example, the scientist who gave Deborah his medical textbook on cell culture in order to "explain" how her mother's cells were being used and had the gall to AUTOGRAPH it for her and send her on her way. Some help.) Some of the scenes out of this book felt like they came out of a B sci-fi movie. Anyway, if you want to learn more about how cell research works today (and what your rights are - or are not), or to find out about the history of the HeLa cells (and their originator, Henrietta Lacks) and their impact and implications, definitely read this book.

easy read, cute story, enjoyed it!
FINALLY FINISHED IT. I couldn't stop drawing Harry Potter comparisons. I hope I will enjoy the rest of the series more now that the groundwork has been set and the story line can move along. Epic fantasy is typically outside my wheelhouse because I simply don't have the patience.

Way too fast, you can't keep track of what just happened when something new comes around. I hear Voltaire drank about fifty to seventy cups of coffee a day ... maybe that explains it.

I read this back when I used to read much faster, so it only took me a summer, but man, this book is a major commitment. I'm not sure why I didn't feel it paid off quite as much as, say, Bleak House. It's pretty well written and rich in detail and all that. If anyone else figures out what it's lacking (character development? dramatic tension?) and can put it into words, please do so.

This is as good as everyone says it is. It's narative draws you into this character of Calli, makes you understand her feelings and confusions. It also lifts up her triumphs so well you yet a frog in your throat - well, I did in the scene she follows the tank on her bike. I think the characters are just SO good that this should not be missed. I came into this book with no expectation other than it was recommended on the internet. I found this a superb way to find it.

** spoiler alert ** 4.5 This book was really good. and it had a great balance in the book but i wished it focused a little more on the love story and their backgrounds. i did want her to be a virgin which she was and i was very happy about that. i will read the next book in the series.

This is a fascinating story, babsed on some fairy tales. I loved it. We also love the movie that was made of the story by Myazaki.
