It's hard to say what I felt about the book. I couldn't put it down, but I could never put the Sweet Valley Twins books down when I was younger either. There were some moments when I was thinking are these the same twins I grew up reading about and then some moments when it felt right. Since I never got into SVH as a teen, there are a lot of "off" references in the book, that didn't realize. I guess all in all if you are in your late 20s to early 30s and are feeling a little nostalgic pick it up and read it, but try to keep your expections at the pre-teen - teen level they were at when you read the books back in the day.

Amusing. one read only. forgettable.
** spoiler alert ** I found when she was talking about the history and structure if the society to be fascinating. When it was just the main character talking about her day to day activities I was kind of bored. I also struggled with the timeline. She said her daughter was 5 when they tried to escape & 8 during the events of the book. When she lost her job the kid was in school so couldn't have been less than 3. I found it hard to believe, that all the logistics could have been put in place in that short a time.

Beautiful book!
There's an interview in The Observer with the author that intrigued me sufficiently to want to read this: comparisons to James Ellroy and some scenes drawn on the author's experiences hanging out with his half-brother Johhny Depp. The interviewer doesn't say whether she liked the book or not though.
If you teach elementary school this is a pretty fabulous read aloud. Since I don't do anything BUT teach elementary school, I reallly enjoyed it.
"Maman died today. Or maybe it was yesterday. I don't remember." Anothe memorable opening line. My favorite part is the discussion with the priest in the prison cell.
