There were so very many things that annoyed me while I was reading this book. Not the least Anita Blake herself. I just want to whack her over the head with a baseball bat, repeatedly. Part of me loves the fact that she's so stubborn, but when that stubbornness becomes pure bigotry against the dead. What? I love vamps, that's why I'm reading about them. The other problem, or one of multiple problems, was the fact that I kept feeling like I've read all this before. If I remember correctly Sookie and Quinn got together much later in the Southern Vampire Mystery books - and those books were published much later than this one - but I couldn't help but draw parallels between those two characters, and Anita and (view spoiler) I guess Charlaine Harris could have filtered it in her books by accident, but I can't remember even her copying (view spoiler) I'm glad that the issue (view spoiler) has been resolved, but I'm disappointed too. There are other ways this could have played out. Maybe that's my main problem with these books. Laurell K. Hamilton seems to be picking every writing path I want her to avoid. Or did, twenty years ago. I'm done with my Anita Blake stash and will have to wait to get my hands on the fourth book. That is, if I'm still interested when the opportunity to read it presents itself.

I enjoyed this historical fiction which is the neighbourly story of the 'Greens'; 'Chapman's'; 'Ritter'; and the 'Chechettis'. In other words American, English, German and Italian neighbours living along a dusty road in Umbria, Italy. Each of these families have their own dreams of turning the somewhat dilapated homes they've purchased into mansions of beauty. For me, this was a picturesque, historical and witty journey through Italy and history. From back cover: "Set in the beautiful landscape and rich history of Umbria, Italy, Booker Prize-winning author Barry Unsworth brings forth a witty and illuminating work of contemporary manners and morals. The region where Hannibal defeated the Romans is now prey to a different type of invasion: outsiders buying villas with innocent and not so innocent dreams. Among those clustered along one hillside road are the Greens, a retired American couple seeking serenity, and the Chapmans, a British couple whose dispute over a wall escalates into a feud of operatic proportions. Add to this mix a wily and corrupt British 'building inspector', Blemish, and a lawyer, Mancini, who practices subterfuge and plans his client's actions like military strategy, and you have a sharpe, entertaining, and satisfying bittersweet work."

Notwithstanding the considerable quantity and quality of research within this book, it was a pleasure to find such a very readable text. Dr Brook’s book is a valuable addition to the bookshelf of anyone who loves, and has an interest in, the English language; because of the core importance of the linguistic contributions made by three (1549, 1552, and 1662) of the five editions of The Book of Common Prayer, in conjunction with the King James (‘Authorised’) Bible of 1611. For some while now, I’ve been of the opinion that the Second Collect in Evening Prayer sounds awkward, but I’d given up wondering why. Dr Brook helpfully explains (pg 135) that this clumsiness is due to “The appearance of anacoluthon, …” ‘Oh help,” I thought. “What on earth’s that?” I need not have become flustered (or reached for the e-dictionary on my Sony e-Reader); because the rest of Dr Brook’s sentence continues, “…or syntactic change of direction in the course of a sentence…” “Ah,” I thought, looking that Collect up in my 1928 (Eng.) Prayer Book; “I learn something new every day!” This book's like that.
As a Mom my conscience dictated that I subtract 1 whole star for "content" ie.sex, drugs, under-age drinking etc. The story was very masterfully woven in a way that though the polar opposite of my high-school days (remembered with sanitized? fondness) felt authentic.

Once again, this is one of the best books that I've read to explain about the China of the last 35 years.
Here Lies the Librarian Here Lies the Librarian, by Richard Peck, opens with a twister reeking havoc in Beulah Land Cemetery, opening graves and leaving contents strewn all about. Pee Wee and big brother Jake, along with Aunt Hat and Colonel Hazelrag, who is stuck in time fighting the civil war, take all in stride. The library, shut down since the former librarian died on duty under the card catalog, is brought back to life when four Library Science Co-eds set out to bring refinement, charm and etiquette to the town and to a few of the town folk. A few unethical shenanigans, a toad at the library tea, a stolen car, and a race that ends in less than a photo finish are all the “price of progress” in this nostalgic but funny tale that is chock full of surprises. Personal thoughts: The card catalog may be long gone, but as library media specialists, it's important that we don't take the Colonel's road. A little charm, etiquette, and a whole lot of technoskill. Loved the book. Richard Peck, you walk on water!

Una agradabilísima sorpresa. Difícil, pero fuerte, personal, intenso.
