The Kitchen Witch is a fun, captivating read. The characters draw you in from the beginning and keep hold of your interest throughout the book. The heroine Melody is quirky and amusing while Logan, the hero, tries to do the right thing in a way that is touching and endearing. The supporting characters are also well written, the dialogue is realistic-sounding, and the plot is believable and not forced as is the case with so many romance novels. All in all, it is a very enjoyable story.

The only John Grisham book I have read, and I was incredibly disappointed. I know the movie versions of his novels are wonderful which means the books must be or he wouldn't have the following he does. But he needs to stick to fiction.

I thought the writing style a tad dry for my taste and the use of fist person isn't really helping it in my opinion. In the end there's a great conceptual idea underlying the story which both in the case of the novel nor the movie adaptation that followed it is never really satisfactorily explored, naturally talking about the question if there is a killer hand on the loose of if the protagonist is simply loosing his mind. Personally I slightly prefer the movie over the novel here, B-picture horror and Michael Caine creating an winning atmosphere here.

This is the first and only Michener I've read after having a few friends recommend him. An interesting read but the writing didn't really grab me. I can appreciate the level of historical detail he includes but his characters seemed a bit like caricatures at times and the last two chapters threw me off. What a weird way to end a book.
