I was a little scared of this book. I knew that Beam had it in her to realistically portray the transgender experience, so my expectations were super high. I also knew that a book like this has the potential to be filled with well-meaning stereotypes in order to present the most inclusive picture: of trans folk, of Puerto Rican New Yorkers, of the dream of being a "real boy," and more. But my fears were unfounded; I loved this book. J really rang true to me as a character and as a transguy, and his experiences, though not universal (thankfully not everyone has to move out or change schools in order to transition, though some undoubtedly do), were realistic. I Am J was everything I hoped it would be. But I did have a couple of problems. I found it hard to believe that J, who has been looking around on the internet for information and support since he was eleven, hadn't heard about T (testosterone injections) or a (chest) binder until he was seventeen. I'm willing to let that go as it allows the reader to learn about these things at the same time that J does. I don't think it would have been such a problem if the book wasn't so obviously written by someone who, like J's support group leader, "talk[s] about the 'gender binary' and 'those of trans-masculine identification' as easily as reciting the alphabet" (243).* Beam is a very very knowledgeable woman, as evidenced by her previous work of non-fiction, Transparent: Love, Family, and Living the T with Transgender Teenagers. She seemed to have a difficult time balancing her wealth of knowledge with the naiveté of her narrator. This may look like more criticisms than praise, but it's really not! I loved I Am J, and I applaud Beam for taking on the issue of transitioning in the context of cultural and familial expectations, and the fallout from not meeting those expectations, in an accessible and authentic way. Not to mention that she wrote a pretty great story of a teen trying to find his direction and place in the world, regardless of all the issues that J has to deal with. I think this is a must buy for libraries serving youth; it's Luna for the guys. There are a myriad of really great gardening books out there. But for the best go-to, how-to books, Edward C. Smith is God. Lucky for us, he wrote the Bible. Two of them, actually. Building on his Vegetable Gardener's Bible (which is wonderful) is now the Vegetable Gardener's Container Bible. These books are the best reference books out there on gardening (well, I'm sure the *really, really* big ones that cost a billion dollars probably are, simply because they are more extensive, but for the money, these are FANTASTIC). I've been home gardening for about 7 years- first in a community garden, and now in containers, and I have read probably 75 gardening books. These are the only two I own-- and for good reason: they're straight to the fucking point. Got any basic questions about how to grow the most common fruits and vegetables? Edward C. Smith has the answer. With high glossy photos. God Bless you, Edward C. Smith. Or, bless yourself, as the case may be.

One of my all time favorite authors and most incredibly descriptive stories I've read. A dark story, but made me dream of one day traveling to Morocco.
4 to 41/2 stars My goodness! This book took me on an emotional roller-coaster ride like none of the other books in the series have. Right from the start, Pleasures of a Dark Prince had me experiencing an array of emotions–from sorrow, to exasperation, to trepidation, to elation. I was exhausted by the end. Once again, I found myself captivated and in awe of the amazingly complex story arc, but flustered and annoyed with the book's romance. In all honesty, I continue reading this series not for the hero and heroine's provocative yet volatile romance (to which I've almost become ambivalent), but for the fantastic characters, the humor, the action/adventure, and the very clever and brilliant storytelling. I struggled with the choices the hero and heroine, Garreth and Lucia, made during this book. Mostly, I struggled with Lucia's decision not to tell Garreth her secrets. I understood her reasoning, since she had some valid points. Ultimately, however, I couldn't help but feel she was being selfish and causing unnecessary heartache and devastating consequences. As I've taken a few days to ponder this book, I've come to realize and accept things could not have happened in any other way. I didn't like Lucia withholding information from Garreth but he wouldn't have listened to reason, or her, anyway. After all, what she feared the most happened to him because of his stubbornness. Regarding Lucia's secrets, I realize there really was no win/win situation. What Lucia did to help Garreth toward the end of this book brought tears to my eyes and helped to redeemed her character. I'm still reeling from the feel-good ending and the very unexpected cliffhanger epilogue. Overall, I enjoyed this book and can't wait to find out what happens next in the series.

It's a beautiful, simple book. Everyone should read it at least once if not more times through out their life to remind them of the little things and a guide in leading life.

Holy shit on a stick. I can't stand Julian. He's a little bitch. And that cliffhanger killed me. OMGOMGOMG. Alex 0.0 I flipped my shit. Shit was flipped. UGH Julian is so unnecessary. I just want more of Alex and Lena. I heard the third book was going to be split between the narration of Lena and Hana. Ain't nobody got time for that.

I love memoirs, so I was bound to like this book. It turned out not to be what I expected, though. I was thinking it'd be a book about a boy who was brought up in a bar. That's not exactly the case. The bar was certainly an important symbol for JR, a focal point, but certainly not a home. I think he only entered it once before he was 18. But anyway, the book is about the author's fatherless childhood and his search for identity and meaning in his life. I read this book as part of a book club and the consensus we came to was that we don't really know why the book was written. We weren't sure if we really cared about his story. But it had its moments.
