I love these Who Was? books. This one was particularly interesting. I think this would be great if your class was studying the Revolutionary War. I was very surprised to find out that Washington had no desire to be president. He would have preferred a quiet life at home. Also, he had a terrible mother! The kids love the facts about his bad teeth and the struggles at Vally Forge. -Susan

Carnal and brutally honest with the core of life sprouting through the streets and alleyways of Paris. A writer living on the edge with no holding back. One of my favorite scenes is when he meets a man from India and they pay a visit to a courtesan. It made me laugh out loud and I want others to enjoy so I won't tell you what happens. Also, check out the excellent documentary "Henry Miller Did Not Die" which is available from the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, CA

Points for cleverness of concept and voyeuristic pleasure, but this story about the arc of a relationship (as viewed through the auction catalog of the ex-couple's possessions) was disappointingly slight. I suppose if I'm going to read a narrative told via sweaters, hats, menus and knick-knacks, I ought to expect a certain lack of depth. But I was hoping for more intrigue, more subtle clues among the artifacts (or maybe the clues were just too subtle for me...?), more reason to care about the protagonists and their relationship. Even though the "auction lots" contained numerous letters between the couple, and various intrusive though plot-advancing "auction notes", the reader wasn't provided enough story to go with the conceit. Cool photographs, however - the model for Lenore is captivating - and I appreciate how the book got me thinking about the "stories" hidden in estate sales, attic clean-outs etc.
