** spoiler alert ** George Orwell's "Animal Farm" is a witty satire about society. Originally written in 1945, it was mainly directed at Soviet Russia, who at the time was pushing Communism. In this novel, a group of animals take over a farm after they rebel against the farmer. Orwell's novel is filled with metaphors, that continue to apply to today's societies. Although the issue of Communism is no longer as present, it still points out countless flaws in society, and will forever continue to do this. It is unique in its style and is captivating to the very end. The book begins with an inspirational speech by an old boar on the farm. He speaks of rebellion, and a better life. He does not know when this rebellion will take place, but assures the animals that it will happen. He dies soon after, and the animals continue on his dream. The rebellion takes place sooner than the animals expected, and before they know it they are in control of the farm. They make seven commandments by which to live. The last one is most relevant to Orwell's message, reading, "All animals are equal." (43) This is easily connected to the idealism behind Communism, and the animals believe they can run their farm in such a way. It is not long before the pigs, who are the most intelligent animals, begin to take over the farm, manipulating those beneath them. Although Orwell originally intended to point out how any Communist nation would eventually end up, he actually made a message much stronger than that. Not only did he point out that Communism would eventually turn into totalitarianism, he also pointed out the unfair differences between classes, in all societies. "The pigs did not actually work, but directed and supervised the others. With their superior knowledge, it was natural that they should assume the leadership." (45) Orwell shows plainly how the break downs of class are unfair, in any society. Those with superior intelligence often times take advantage of others. Often times people in the upper class get more money, while doing much less work than those in the lower classes. Orwell points out countless other flaws in society and human nature in his book. He shows how easily people succumb to greed, and how those in charge often times take advantage of the people they are monitoring. When given the chance, the pigs immediately take more for themselves. In addition to that, they find ways to ensure they will never be ripped from power, like running out the competition, and establishing a private fighting force. Despite the fact that the intended target for his book has long since changed, Animal Farm will forever be a relevant classic to society. It has timeless messages, that everyone should read and attempt to understand. The book is very well written, and enjoyable as well. Not only does it have a good deeper message, but it also entertaining. Orwell brings each animal to life, and the reader soon finds themselves attached to each one. There are many reason to read this book-which one will you choose?

When a few of my literary friends took to Twitter recently, raving about the long running "In Death" series I had to give it a try. I figured since the series is set in the future, it at least had that to keep me interested. After finishing this first book of the series, Naked in Death, I'm left thinking "where has this series been all my life?" Do you remember when CSI first came out like 20 years ago? J/K! But seriously, remember how great it was? I'm not ashamed to admit that I was a rabid fan when that show first aired. I loved how sexy they made crime scene investigating look. Well, JD Robb, aka Nora Roberts, captures that same magic by mixing passion and crime; scandals and sex. The series centers around New York detective Eve Dallas, who is though, smart, sexy and damaged, so very damaged. Eve is your basic "I don't need anyone" type. She'll draw you in with her accessible inner voice and will shock you as she starts to pull back the layers of her psyche. Readers won't be able to help themselves from wanting to unravel all her personal mysteries. The book sets a brake-neck pace early on with the introduction of a serial killer that Dallas must track down. The acts the killer commits are heinous, but for reasons that can only be attributed to the masterful way in which Robb keeps everything approachable, they only come off as gritty instead of sadistic. With only a few players involved the "bad guy" wasn't too hard to guess, but the twists and turns you experience throughout keep you engaged and second guessing yourself. The dark nature of the series is leveled out though by the budding relationship Dallas has with Roarke ... just Roarke. Roarke is exactly what readers want from an alpha male. He's full of himself and demanding and wants everything to do with the protagonists. Of course his gorgeous good looks don't hurt matters. But all that aside, I was surprised at the true emotions we get from him. Granted, we don't get them very often, but I think that's why it works. We WANT those reactions so badly from him that when you get them you're all a flutter. Now, the series has over 30 books in them so I'm not going to be reviewing each one separately, but let me assure you that I will be reading them behind the scenes. *whispers* I have books 2-10 already waiting for me on my ipad. Bottom line: A fantastic crime series with a tough female lead, a delicious male counterpart and sticky plots to boot. Perfect entertainment!
