Um, I did not see the humor in this book. Sure, there were funny anecdotes, but I wouldn't call it "one of the funniest novels I have ever read" as Geoffrey Wolfe does on the back cover. I did enjoy the book though.

This completely threw me for a loop. It starts off as a series of gross-out humor adventures but then suddenly veers toward a grisly climax and depressing end. The only things I can think to compare this to is Bridge to Terabithia and -to a very slight degree- Crime and Punishment. Definitely an odd book. Van Draanen is defintely one of my favorite kid/YA writers.

Her history changed as often as she changed her gloves and, like the tease she was, she obscured more with each retelling. Gypsy Rose Lee was intelligent, frustrating, talented, gifted, and damaged. In American Rose Karen Abbott veers between Gypsy’s past and present and lays bare the facts with scholarly precision and a storyteller’s eyes. Abbott intersperses her Gypsy’s life with a history of burlesque and the Minskys, laying the foundation of the burlesque circuit and evoking the Great Depression so that it comes alive. Although I found the chapters on burlesque and the Depression fascinating and informative, I found they distracted from Gypsy’s story. It is obvious Abbott has done her homework and knows the era well, but I would have preferred American Rose to be about Gypsy Rose Lee. Ultimately, Abbott’s discerning eye and deft strokes illuminate an otherwise secretive and private woman with brains and a talent for showing herself in the best possible light. Abbott is no tease as she strips Gypsy bare with style and finesse. American Rose is as fractured as its subject but far more illuminating.

Children forced to be adults before they're ready. Catholic guilt, racism, incest, lesbianism, misunderstandings and family disfunctions, rigid traditions, suppressed memories, babies, and physical handicaps, gee, anything else? Books about extreme family disfunction are probably my least favorite. They just seem gratuitous after awhile, like how far can we push it... and this one goes right over the edge.

One of the best books I've ever read! Something about it sucks you in and you can't put it down. Then, for years to come, it stays in your head and you're constantly wanting to re-read it. Or, at least that was my case with the book. It's a story of music, love, confusion, addiction, and destiny. The romance and conflicts all feel real and deeply root themselves within you. I loved the perspective of Kevin Brooks and his look at such a unique storyline. It's amazing to make a movie to in your head!

This was one of my favorite books growing up. The story of John Henry Wiedner, who was a textile executive in Annecy, France during the Second World War. John devoted himself to helping persecuted people escape to Switzerland from the Nazis and Vichy France. The book is paced very well explaining the situations and events and builds suspense throughout. Pictures in the center of the hardback helped me imagine myself in John's time and situation. Awesome book and highly recommended. Check it out you cannot go wrong. I recently passed through Geneva, Switzerland and saw the mountains mention by the author.

I wholeheartedly endorse all of the scientific and statistical arguments put forth by Billy Beane, Bill James, Scott Hatteberg (!), and all the other "characters" in the book... I just didn't find it all that compelling of a read.
