I liked it a lot. It wasn't the BEST book I've read, but it was pretty good, and I really liked the protagonist. I'm a bit confused about the society that they live in, and I wish more detail was given to this. Parts of the book just made me sick though (especially the killing innocent kids parts). Regardless, it was good enough to make me finish the trilogy - maybe I'll become more attached to the rest of the books. I don't think it was all it was cracked up to be, though. I had to give a presentation on why Stalin was a better leader than Lenin, and aside from the fact that there was never even one attempt on his life (unlike Lenin--although that's not to say only bad leaders are assassinated, it's just inexplicable to me that no one even tried to kill Stalin), he really was exceedingly effective, if not necessarily compassionate, per se. Fascinating (and terrifying) guy. At least we can credit him with stopping the Nazi onslaught...even if at the expense of millions of his own people...but that was just his way, eh?
Hate dystopias and still came to be totally absorbed by this tale. I did not love the heroine and still liked the pacing, plot, & message of the author.

When You Are Engulfed in Flames follows Sedaris' usual template: a series of humorous personal essays that ramble but wrap up with a gem of tongue-in-cheek insight. If you've enjoy anything from Sedaris in the past, this is more of the same—in a good way, of course. The last quarter of the book strays from the formula. It is a much longer piece about living in Japan for several months as he attempted to quit smoking. (The title of the book comes from written Japanese instructions on fire safety and prevention.) While his humor is easy to see (I read the babysitter/backscratcher story twice because I found it so funny), it's easy to overlook Sedaris' craftsmanship. The wording and phrasing are meticulous. The flow of each essay is perfect; each gives the sense of spontaneity despite (and because of) what must have been a hundred revisions, edits, and rewrites. Among the essays, there were no real duds. I ended up skipping two of the stories, however, when my "prude meter" went off.
