I just really did not enjoy this book. I guess I understood why the characters were unhappy, but I didn't feel bad for them.

I'd have to say this book was disappointing. It was a little bit tedious to read the narrator speak in a faux Irish manner (he's from Chicago although is wife is Irish). The story plods along. The ending is predictable. Blah. I borrowed this from a friend - I'm glad I didn't buy it.

"It does happen, you know, from time to time, that a man finds a woman who is the answer to all his more searching dreams. And the two have understanding of each other from the lightest moment to the darkest mood" "of whom she knew nothing but that they were pirates and outlaws, unscrupulous and dangerous, led by a man who had never told her anything of himself, whom she loved ridiculously without rhyme or reason"
Not the greatest book, but not the worst either.

Greg Mortenson is amazing. His work is amazing. The writing was often not amazing in a way that led to this 3-star rating.

Jamie Donovan has been stuck with the label of lazy playboy for all of his adult life. Sure he's perpetuated the title and done more than his share of dumb things, but he's trying to be responsible and he wishes his siblings would see he's putting in the effort. Determined to start making a difference at the family brewery, Jamie enrolls in a Restaurant management class at the local college. He's hoping the class will help him pull together all his ideas for expanding the brewery without having the leave the current space. How lucky for him, his teacher happens to be willing to help him take those ideas from cocktails napkins to presentation. Olivia Bishop left her dreams of helping restaurant owners design and implement their ideas behind in order to support her college professor husband. He had dreams of being a department chair and needed the perfect wife to host his parties and make him look good. Too bad his dream also involved compromising positions with his Teaching Assistants. So now Olivia finds herself teaching classes, without actually having any seniority and tenure, just to get by. It's by chance that she recognizes one of her students as the sexy bartender from the brewery her book club meets at. After striking up a conversation, Jamie and Olivia strike a deal. She'll help him with his restaurant ideas and he'll help her rediscover her fun side. Jamie is absolutely freaking adorable. There was so much more going on behind that flirtatious smile and it took the serious Olivia to see past the mask. He was guilt ridden over his hand is what happened to his parents and frustrated about not being able to break free of the vicious circle he found himself in with his older brother. With Olivia, he found that he could be serious and determined, while still maintaining the fun personality everyone associates with him. Olivia was a tough nut. She had an ass as an ex-husband who used her for his own personal gain while having parents that constantly told her she didn't know what she was doing (whether it be her choice in men or career direction). She'd been beaten down and lost herself. But Jamie was able to help her find the girl who loved amusement parks, stayed out late, and made out in the middle of the street. She found that being in a relationship with someone didn't mean given up what you wanted, but having that person help you strive to make that dream a reality. You will not be disappointed in this addition to the Donovan Brothers Brewery series. No hint in this one on what's going to happen with Eric, but I bet it'll be spectacular! 4 Cocktails

This is the story of Clare, a successful owner of several flower stores and a new mother to twin babies. To cope, Clare hires a live in nanny, Jenna, and the story unfolds from there. Clare's husband Marc resents Jenna in their home, Jenna has an abusive boyfriend, Clare finds out that Marc has been using their mortgage as collateral on speculative stock market trades, and one of the babies becomes dangerously ill. The book is written from alternating character's perspective; it's well structured, flows easily and engages the reader. I found the characters for the most part believable and sympathetic (except for the abusive boyfriend). The story falls a bit off track when one of the babies is kidnapped and another character, Cooper, who becomes Clare's love interest, is introduced in an implausible way. I would recommend this book as light, summer reading and I will read another of Tess Stimson's books.

This is the second novel by Stephen Hunter that I've read, and while it doesn't quite hit the cartoonishly hypertrophic heights of Dirty White Boys , it's more tightly focused and plotted. This is both good and bad, since after the first 100 or 200 pages it feels as if the characters are all slaves to the plot, which is unfortunate, since they actually had the potential to be pretty interesting people. On the plus side, the technical details of marksmanship and rifles are all pretty interesting, and--unlike so many overwritten thrillers--integral to the story.

I did not enjoy this book nearly as much as I hoped I would. I think maybe cyberpunk is not the sub-genre for me. I had a hard time following the plot and the use of jargon and slang along with the sentence structure and dialogue style just combined to make a thoroughly frustrating experience. This was an exercise in style that i just could not get into. On the up side, some of the more fast-paced scenes were a lot of fun and saved the book from being totally unlikeable for me.

I am a better person than people who have not read this book and Tolstoy would agree. But seriously, this book deserves every bit of its status as THE classic. It's beautiful, and Tolstoy is a genius (and he knows it!).
