I think Elisabeth Elliot has a lot of great ideas about relationships- Between us and God and between men and women. I benefited greatly from her lifetime of experience. She also had an awesome radio show.....

Shel Silverstein is a genius. I recently picked this book up for the first time since I was in elementary school and it brought back so many memories. I was suprised to find that I remembered many of the poems from all those years ago. Good stuff. :)

An entertaining read--informative, even--but the going got slower and now I wonder if I'll ever finish it. Maybe a bit too many factoids to take in.
I came relatively late to the Hyperion series (I think Hyperion was originally published over 20 years ago) and in fact was unfamiliar with Dan Simmons' science fiction (my Simmons introduction was through his horror, most notably "Summer of Night") but I knew that he was a master of genre fiction. Simmons really stretched his chops (in a good way) on this one. The novel is set in a time in the future, Earth has been destroyed but her surviving humans have colonized several hundred worlds, most are included in the Protectorate of the Hegemony of Humankind. Hyperion is a planet in the outback of the Hegemony on the cusp of becoming included in the protectorate. The Hegemony has a sometimes hot, sometimes cold war brewing with the Ousters--some of Earth's earliest space faring folk who do not colonize planets and seem to hate the Hegemony. Hyperion seems to have some puzzling strategic importance to both of these factions (and possibly other powers). Against this backdrop, seven pilgrims are selected by the Church of the Shrike to make the often fatal pilgrimage to the mysterious and eerie Time Tombs of Hyperion. In a pretty cool take on the Canterbury Tales, Simmons has the pilgrims agree to each tell the story of how they came to be on this journey. What then follows is a wide range of stories which flow through different genres: science fiction, horror, even some straight up hard boiled noir detective stuff. This is a 7 Layer Burrito wrapped in a Chalupa wrapped in a Gordita with some Potato Oles on the side.
He's still my favorite author. Quick, thought-provoking read and I got the ending I wanted:)

I must have read this in my late childhood or early teens but I still remember its impact on me. To this day it is one of only three books that I have cried over! It is a must read of any lover of literature, whether young or young at heart. If you love animals it will impact you even more significantly. I fully intend on re-reading this someday.
I picked up this book because I got to know Kara Sheridan, one of the author's inspirations and information resources for the story of a child born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bone Disease. I had already read one Jodi Picoult novel, "Keeping Faith" in anticipation of this book's release. Ms. Picoult writes novels that don't always have happy endings, about issues that are not generally clear cut -- they're always fuzzy and grey around the edges. In this case, the story is as much about the topic of "unlawful birth" lawsuits as it is about OI, and how both affect two families who were once close friends.

It was ok. The plot continued to be developed, however I felt the character development was really lacking. These characters were essentially the same people that they were in the first book. Lowered my opinion of the first couple of books as the potential I saw was never really realized.
